DESIGN

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

The build quality of the ThinkPad X1 carbon is very good especially considering how light it is. And it’s got soft-touch plastics around the entire of this body that feels soft and good on the hands.

Overall it feels more like a tool or a piece of equipment. If you’re the kind of person who wants a thin and light in weight.

This is the ultra-portable from their business line of laptops, so there’s no fancy features here. But you will get some solid functionality and hardware across the board. As well as excellent engineering that makes this a laptop.

And some of the subtle angles and curves around the edges, which helps to hide some of the thickness of this laptop. it’s not a particularly thick laptop in general.

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

This is a device which primarily designed as a business device, but you can certainly use it as a home device as well.

It’s very thin but not heavy it’s pretty light in weight and it has a nice soft touch body. The surface is plastic with just a little bit of metal on the hinges. This is a convertible laptop so you can use it in tablet mode too.

DISPLAY

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

It’s a 14-inch screen display with full HD 1920 X 1800. The HDR display with 4k resolution, they claimed 500 nits brightness on this. This is a glossy display you can use this out-doors too.

I appreciate some of the features included here like the 180-degree turn which gives you the most flexibility in display positioning.

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

This is a 14-inch HDR Dolby vision display. It’s a WQHD resolution 2560 X 1440. It supports intel 8 generation Intel Core I7-8650U processor. This is yoga gen 3 with the HDR display.

It’s excellent for watching HDR content, it has an amazing screen brightness with an average of 520 nits. This thing is super bright good for both indoor and outdoor use.

It covers the color gamut extremely well, an amazing 201 SRGB and 100% Adobe RGB. This is the perfect choice for those doing Photoshop and 4k video editing.

It does have a pen that you can store in the device and it uses the Wacom AES technology, you get 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity. Which is great for taking notes, great for sketching out artwork etc.

WEIGHT AND DIMENSIONS

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

The weight of this laptop is 1.13KG. One of the smallest 14-inch laptops you can get, the 6th-Gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon has the same, slim dimensions (12.7 x 8.5 x 0.6 inches)

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

This laptop having around 1.14kg weight. And the dimensions of this laptop are 333 x 229 x 17.05 (mm).

PERFORMANCE

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

This is a fast performant and laptop. There are some configuration options available that can take you up to a core i7 CPUs. This is an Intel® Core™ i5-8350U processor with 16 GB of RAM and 1TB SSD.

Surface temperatures on this are not hot, the materials they use here is carbon fiber and magnesium. All this it just doesn’t transmit a lot of heat to you.

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

It has up to 16 GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 1 TB of PCI-e NVMe SSD storage. It’s running the 8th gen Intel Core i7-8550U.

This is a great productivity machine, you can get things done like Microsoft Office, email, web browsing, multimedia consumption, YouTube.

This is not a gaming laptop, but if you want games on this laptop, some of the older games can be playable on the lower settings but some of the new games will be less playable on your settings, and it also depends on which game you choose.

PORT SELECTION

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

There is type A and type C USB, Thunderbolt 3 HDMI. The x1 carbon users perhaps the best range of ports I’ve seen on a laptop recently.

On the left-hand side, you get to thunderbolt free ports both of those are of course USBC and either of them can be used for charging. There’s also a full-size USB 3.0 port, full size HDMI and a proprietary connector that is used with the included Ethernet dongle.

There’s also an additional full-size USB 3.0 port on the right-hand side, as well as the 3.5 mm audio jack and quite a significant vent for the cooling solution.

On the back edge of the laptop is a micro SD and SIM card slot. It’s nice to see both of these features included here you can quite easily expand the storage of this laptop without having dongles or external devices. And LTE connectivity can be very handy although this does cost extra in some regions and models of the X1 carbon.

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

On the left side, there are three Thunderbolt ports and they do support for LAN, so if you want to connect multiple 4k monitors you can do that. There’s also a USB port.

On the right side, you get HDMI and another USB Type-A a port, a breakout port for ethernet 3.5-millimeter headset jack and of course your power button with an LED indicator light in it.

On the back, there is your micro SD card slot for storage expansion and your SIM slot for your optional LTE.

KEYBOARD & TOUCHPAD

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

There is a fingerprint sensor included below the keyboard on the X1 carbon. And I appreciate how several laptop manufacturers are including the security feature. It’s very responsive and it works extremely well to secure your device. it’s much easier than entering a pin or password every time and I wish more laptops had this sort of feature in it.

This wouldn’t be a ThinkPad laptop without the signature keyboard that has been used for generations. It’s quite good on the X1 carbon, the travel distance from each key is fantastic, for an ultra-portable and this leads to great touchable feedback across the board. Most of the keys are enough sized such as the modifier keys, the function keys, leaving the arrow keys, and this helps make the laptop keyboard quite easy to get used to and use daily.

You’ve got a nice touchpad with multi-gesture support with responsive 3 button control on the top of the touchpad and as an alternative they add a red little joystick on the keyboard, a great setup for the ThinkPad X1 carbon.

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

It’s got a multi-stage backlight allowing you to do work in a dark room or a dimly lit environment.

It has 1.4 millimeters of key travel, very comfortable to type on, especially for extended periods.

It has a nice touchpad, uses precision drivers, all the gestures work as advertised and two fingers scrolling is very smooth. And you also gonna love the track point.

SPEAKERS

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

Almost on the bottom of the machine, you’ve got a pair of speakers with a 2X2 watt Dolby audio premium sound system. These speakers produce reasonably good and loud sound but lacking in bass response.

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

There are two speakers located on the bottom. It is very loud and it will work well in a medium-sized room.

BATTERY

Thinkpad X1 Carbon:

On the battery life of the ThinkPad x1 carbon offered respectable performance. And putting up nearly 7.5 hours of HD video loop test.

In terms of battery life, it’s a fantastic result in the Wi-Fi, browsing test, and also very well in video playback as well from just a 57 watt-hour battery.

Thinkpad X1 Yoga:

You get your power cable and your 65- watt power adapter, it’s also USB-C.

It’s got a 54 watt-hour battery that Lenovo claims will give you up to 15.4 hours of battery life.

When it comes to battery life the x1 yoga did pretty well. It can work around 8 hours and 42 minutes on the continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 115 nits.

They do supply it with a 65-watt power adapter that uses rapid charge technology. It’ll give you a full charge in less than 2 hours which is pretty good.

WHICH ONE TO BUY?

So in the end after comparing these both laptops, I recommend you to go with Yoga gen 3. It has a very good quality display, a good battery life, and many other very useful features. You can also use this as a tab and do your work easily. It’s quite expensive but you can spend your money on it. It will worth it.
