INTRODUCTION:

Dell XPS 13 7390

The XPS 7390 offers little bit different features than the others in this category. Instead of Ice Lake, this uses a Comet Lake processor with Intel UHD graphics. This combo may give less performance in gaming and all but it gives a solid performance for office works and all productivity works.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

It’s got a beautiful full HD display. It’s got excellent build quality, a beautiful design, and of course really good battery life and hopefully improved performance.

Dell XPS 13 7390

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION:

Dell XPS 13 7390

The design of the Dell laptops almost never changes but it offers some improvements like weight and thinness. The XPS 7390 looks so sleek which will be easy to carry around. The silver finish on the outer area and black matte finish at the inner area like the palm rest makes this laptop look so modern.

I believe it’s the same keyboard as last year at least in terms of typing experience and layout. My criticisms with the brightness control being on the arrow keys rather than in the function row still stand. Typing experience remains the same, decent key travel but it is slightly on the shorter side. Good tactile feedback and in terms of typing speed and typing accuracy, it did take me a couple of hours to adjust. It’s good for typing but it would definitely benefit from deeper key travel for comfort. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the power button for easy logins.

The trackpad is rather small, I find that my fingers go off the trackpad when I’m doing vertical scrolling gestures but there’s not a lot of extra room around the trackpad. It’s got an excellent acceleration curve and accuracy, the click mechanism feels great but it’s relatively loud compared to other ultrabooks which might matter to you if you’re often in quiet areas.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

This laptop is thin, light, very sleek looking, and very premium with the excellent build quality. The laptop has platinum silver with an arctic white interior, very nice looking but of course, you could always get into more traditional colors like black. Now, I love the versatility that this brings, you could put it into the tent mode and the stand mode is also really great for consuming media, watching movies, and all. You could put it into tablet mode, great for use with the pen.

Now, as far as the keyboard is concerned, on the one hand, it has decent tactile feedback and on the other hand very shallow Keys in terms of key travel. So, if you don’t like the Apple MacBook, so this one is very similar in my opinion, you may not like this. If you don’t like shallow type keyboards, you might not like this, but it does have an excellent touchpad. Its two fingers scrolling is really buttery smooth. This is a precision touchpad, so the responsiveness is there.

DISPLAY QUALITY:

Dell XPS 13 7390

It comes with a 1080p screen, image quality is excellent. I consider a thousand-to-one contrast to be good and an average Delta E of under 2.5 is considered perfect color accuracy, so imperceivable to the human eye. However, the brightness isn’t as good as the MacBook Pro or the Surface laptop. So, 280 nits, I would consider being the minimum and it’s the most common among mid-range ultrabooks and 144 Hertz gaming laptops 315 nits, so this laptop is very comfortable indoors. So, it’s perfectly good for the vast majority of people and 450 plus being used outdoors which those two laptops achieve.

If you are a content creator, I would still point you towards the 1080p screen unless you need a brighter screen. They did an excellent job here as far as image quality and color accuracy.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

The star of the show has to be its 13.4 inches full HD plus infinity edge display. It has a resolution of 1920 by 1200, which means this has a 16:10 aspect ratio making this a good choice for both not only consuming media but for getting worked on in terms of productivity. It’s a very bright display coming in at 465 nits making this an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor use. It covers the color gamut very well with a hundred percent sRGB, 76% Adobe RGB making this a great choice for those creative professionals that do Lightroom, Photoshop, and of course video editing. There are some intense vibrant colors and very good contrast although the Delta E score could be a little bit lower in terms of color accuracy. You gotta love those really micro-thin bezels with that infinity edge display giving this a very modern look and very sleek look.

There is a 4k option if you want to upgrade to that although, I don’t think you really need it in this case, this is a very sharp, bright, and colorful display. The 4k maybe a little bit overkill in my opinion, especially if you want to get better battery life.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

FEATURES:

Dell XPS 13 7390

Performance hasn’t really changed though with a new tenth generation U series CPUs. They’re more about energy efficiency than performance with this six-core CPU being the obvious exception. The high-end model configured with the Core i7 10710U with 16 gigabytes of RAM and a 512 gigabytes SSD. You only have access to the SSD the RAM and the Wi-Fi card are both soldered on.

Like with all their previous laptops, this one also does not have manual fan control but they do give you these fan profiles for some level of control. I immediately noticed that the fans ramped up much faster and much earlier than the last-gen, not enough to be annoying in like a library or any quiet space at least from my normal usage but enough to prevent it from thermal throttling from light tasks.

Speakers are still located on the sides near the front of the laptop, it’s a fair compromise to the usual bottom-firing speakers but given the space beside the keyboard, I feel like they could have benefited from a larger surface area. They sound good. For ports, you have two Thunderbolt 3, one USB-C, a MicroSD slot, and a headphone jack. You can also charge up the laptop from both sides, it’s such a nice convenient feature.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

In the box, you do get a 45-watt power adapter, it’s a pretty compact USB-C, you also get your extension cord. You can also get this one with a pen to use, it’s a really good pen and feels great for taking notes, sketching out artwork. It also uses one quadruple A battery.

In terms of port selection, on the left side, you get a Thunderbolt 3 port, and it does support 4 lanes, you also get a micro SD card slot for storage expansion. On the right side, you get a 3.5-millimeter audio jack, another Thunderbolt 3 port. In case you were wondering, the pen does stick magnetically to the side of the device.

The stylus pen has 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity, great for taking notes, great for sketching out artwork, great for navigating through Windows 10. Now, the pen is a separate accessory but it’s definitely worth it if you do take notes and if you are a digital artist.

The good news is even with these super-slim bezels, they managed to put the camera in a proper place, no longer on the bottom or on the side. There are a couple of things with regards to the 720p webcam which are it’s in proper placement and the quality is not that bad. I think is actually pretty decent considering how small this camera is that they had to fit in such a small bezel on the top.

The good news is Dell makes it easy to access the inside of the laptop, all you need to do is remove the Torx T5 screws and remove the bottom plate and you’re in. The bad news is there’s not much to be upgraded other than the battery because the RAM is soldered into the motherboard as is the SSD drive. So, when you’re checking out, make sure you get enough RAM and storage to fit your needs because you won’t be able to upgrade it later on. The good news is the SSD do supply you with is very fast in terms of reads and writes. When we test the speed of the SSD from the crystal disk mark test, it’s really excellent and I thought they did a very good job in terms of the thermals never getting above my comfort threshold and that’s pretty good although it will give thermal problem under extremely heavy load. It does have dual fans and they are very quiet, so it’s not noticeable and that’s always very good.

CPU OPTIONS:

Dell XPS 13 7390

It is running a U series ultra-low voltage CPU and integrated graphics but for lighter tasks like photo editing particularly with raw photos, I can reasonably see people doing that on this laptop given its Portability and a very nice screen. However, editing raw photos will spike your CPU to 100%, so it’s a task that can be done on pretty much any modern computer it’s not something that requires the processing to be done in real-time like it is with video editing but it will benefit from better performance. For those kinds of tasks, that’s where I see their thermals and performance improvements being useful.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

This laptop has Intel’s latest processor, the 10th generation processor Core i7 1065G7 aka Ice Lake. If we check out the benchmarks, from the PC Mark 10, it did really well with a score of 4658 which is an excellent score and by the way, that benchmark is a very good indicator of everyday use. It did really well on the Geek Bench 4 both the single-core and multi-core scores as well as the OpenCL score which is a good indicator of graphics and of course, it did well on the Cinebench R15.

To illustrate this performance improvement, we compared this laptop with the Dell XPS 13 9380. There is a definite improvement, not a tremendous improvement but definitely a marked improvement over the previous generation Whiskey Lake processor.

Dell-XPS-13-7390

GPU OPTIONS:

Dell XPS 13 7390

The GPU option available here is the Intel UHD graphics with shared memory which is not very powerful for like gaming, hard-core video editing. In this one, even they are not mentioning that this is Intel UHD 620 graphics, maybe this is not the UHD 620 model. This graphics will work well for light gaming and for productivity works.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

I did see an improvement in terms of gaming although this is not a dedicated gaming laptop but you can play some of the older titles if you lower the settings, you will get some playable frame rates but if you want to play the AAA titles on their highest settings, this just is not there yet. Although you do see an improvement again over the Whiskey Lake processor you get a little bit better playing frame rate but if you do want to connect to an external GPU, you can, this has two Thunderbolt 3 ports so that is optional though it will add to the overall cost of this laptop.

BATTERY:

Dell XPS 13 7390

There’s a 52 watt-hour battery inside and I’m having about 10 half to 11 hours of battery life with light use. This is with a 1080p screen, the 4K panel in the past gets around 2 hours less, so about 8 hours of battery life.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

It has a very impressive battery life getting around 9 hours on my continuous web surfing test over Wi-Fi at 115 nits. This is doing very well in this category giving you all-day battery life that is something we definitely want to see in a thin and light 2-in-1 convertible laptop. If you do need to plug in, it does come with a compact 45-watt USB-C power adapter that will give you 80% in one and half hours, a full charge will take 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1

WHICH TO BUY?

I think the brighter display and the much-improved thermals and performance make the XPS 7390 a solid choice. The base model is not great with a dual-core CPU with four gigabytes RAM that’s absolutely terrible but the mid-range model pump set up to a quad-core CPU and 8 gigabytes RAM which I think is fair for the overall package. I think the XPS 7390 2-in-1 is a really good improvement over the last iteration. It gives you more versatility, you could put it in the tent mode, stand mode, tablet mode, and laptop mode and it really gives you that versatility that you’d want. You can also use it with a pen. All-day battery life is really good, especially for a thin and light laptop.

In my opinion, both are good laptops to buy. If you’re a student or you want the laptop for more outdoor work, then definitely the XPS 7390 2-in-1 will be advantageous and its processor performance is also really great. This one is a little bit pricier than the normal XPS 7390, not too much but this will be better because it has Intel Iris Plus graphics and a convertible design.

Overall, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is the computer I’ve been wanting Dell to make — more daring and interesting than the staid standard model, but still maintaining the qualities that have made the XPS 13 a perennial contender. The 2-in-1 makes no compromises when it comes to performance, is just as compact and portable as the standard XPS 13, and has a more usable display.
