INTRODUCTION:

The Dell Inspiron 7400 is one of the best home and office sort of laptops I’ve used. It can be used for business or home, these things are Evo laptops. The Evo laptops are supposed to be super expensive but this one at the moment is a bargain. On the other side for comparison, we have Aus Zenbook 14 that also has almost similar configurations. So, let’s see which one is keeping its crown one of the best portable ultrabooks out there.

Asus ZenBook 14

DESIGN & BUILD:

Dell Inspiron 14 7400

It’s made for home and office for the business user. Build quality is superb. These Inspiron laptops are nearly XPS quality in terms of build quality like premium metal build and it is a 14-inch laptop. This 14-inch laptop comes in nice platinum silver. You would think a 14-inch laptop is going to be a little bit heavier but not this one. This one weighs only 2.78 pounds or 1.25 kilos. It’s only 14.25 millimeters thick or 0.56 of an inch.

The keyboard is really good. If you’re going to be typing away all day on this keyboard, I think you’re going to enjoy it, I do like the trackpad as well.

Asus Zenbook 14 UX425

This ultrabook has a premium feel in a great way. The Zenbook is a super well-built laptop. This laptop only weighs 2.4 pounds which is light enough that it won’t be a burden on the back and heavy enough to give the luxurious feel you want with a high-quality laptop. You can easily open the laptop with one hand and it has a two-tier hinge system, which’s quite nice and sturdy.

On the top, you have a metallic finish that’s cold to the touch. There is a very minute texture that comes in the form of a little circle that kind of acts around the Asus logo and it looks pretty cool on it. Also, it has a nice shine to it. As you make your way to the rear side of the laptop, you will notice large exhaust fans from which all the hot air comes out from, also in the center you’ll see the Zenbook branding. As you make your way to the bottom, Asus did not cheap on this part. On the bottom, you have a metallic finish whereas a lot of other manufacturers put a hard TPU built.

One super impressive thing is the trackpad. Not only is it massive inside, but it’s also got a super-premium feel. It’s a glass trackpad that has super tactile clicks, they are subtle, well balanced, and this is a really high-quality piece of mechanism. If that wasn’t enough, Asus actually put a built touch sensor number pad on the trackpad. You can just pretty the button on the top right corner of the trackpad to get the number pad on it. This is phenomenal, I love the minimalist feature and it just looks so elegant.

Coming to the keyboard, this has a fantastic keyboard in terms of quality. It’s a fully backlit keyboard, you can increase the brightness level settings and it’s well lit. The overall quality of keys is superb, the keys are not loose and they are actually sturdy and firm. Also, you have a good tactile feel when you type on and it’s not super loud which will be great if you type in a quiet environment. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the key travel is more than enough, giving a good typing experience. Unfortunately, you don’t get an option for a fingerprint scanner onboard.

DISPLAY:

Dell Inspiron 14 7400

What separates this over most other laptops is the 16 by 10 ratio display which is amazing. We have 100% sRGB and I measured over 300 nits of brightness. It’s a nice resolution too, it’s not crazy 4K but it’s 2560 by 1600 which will be the perfect resolution for you.

Asus Zenbook 14 UX425

In this Asus Zenbook 14, you have super thin bezels which are a little noticeable. When other manufacturers decreasing the quality levels to cutting the cost, Asus concentrating on their features and the display. You have a modest IPS display with a 1080p resolution. You have a color spectrum rating of 100% sRGB, this laptop has some of the most amazing colors I’ve seen in this price range. The colors are super vivid, lively, and they have a lot of depth to them. If you’re a creative user who does photo editing, color grading, or video editing, you will absolutely appreciate every pixel of this display.

In terms of brightness, you have a peak brightness of 300 nits which is more than ample for all kinds of indoor settings and It’s fine for most outdoor settings. However, if you use this in direct sunlight, you may find this brightness ever so slightly short.

Dell Inspiron 14 7400

FEATURES:

Dell Inspiron 14 7400

This has the Intel 11th generation CPUs Evo certified which means nine hours battery life, good display, and all the good stuff. The Evo means the best Intel has to offer. You can get up to 16 GB RAM that’s super fast LPDDR4x and 4267 megahertz, you can’t upgrade the RAM. You have one M.2 drive in there, so you can upgrade the SSD anytime you want and there is an option of an MX350 graphics which can give you a bit of extra kick. You also get a fingerprint and privacy shutter for your webcam.

It’s Evo certified, so you do get thunderbolt 4. You also get two USB 3.1 gen 1 ports, 2 USB 3.2 gen 1 port, an audio combination jack, an HDMI 2.0, and a micro SD card slot. The sound is actually decent. It’s not Macbook Pro-quality but the sound is good enough and loud enough to fill the room.

You can get with the MX350, that version doesn’t get the Evo, even though it’s pretty much exactly the same as the Evo certified ones because it has Nvidia graphics as well as Xe graphics.

Asus Zenbook 14 UX425

This one comes with Intel’s latest iteration Core i7 processor, 16 GB LPDDR4x RAM on 4200 MHz, Intel Iris Xe graphics, also you have a 512 GB SSD, Wi-Fi 6 for connectivity, and a 14-inch FHD screen onboard.

Making your way to the side of the laptop, you’ll notice like most ultrabooks, I/O portability is on the more limited side here. But unlike the other ultrabooks, Asus has put good thought into I/O port diversity and making the most of the limited sorts to offer. On one side, you have a full-size HDMI port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports that are also USB-C ports, and both of them can use for power means you can charge your laptop. on the other side, you have a USB 3.0 port and a micro SD card.

On the two sides of the bottom, we have speaker grilles which are stereo speaker setup. These speakers are by Harman Kardon. These speakers sound pretty decent for a 14-inch laptop. The top bezel houses a mediocre 720p webcam. Under a mid-light setting, this camera will not be such a useful one. It skips movements and lags quite a bit.

PERFORMANCE:

Dell Inspiron 14 7400

The 1165H7 gives a really good performance. You won’t hear the fans at all unless you’re really pushing it, so that’s good. I like how it’s tuned in that regard the thermals. When you peg everything 100% max, it’s going to get a little bit warm and you will hear the fans but generally, it is not going to be an issue and even under full load, you can have it on your lap. The real question is should you get with the MX350 graphics? I will say no, it’s a little bit faster than the Xe graphics and it’s going to give you a little bit of extra performance but I don’t think the performance difference is sort of worth for the price but if you want the best graphics, you can get the MX350 graphics.

Asus Zenbook 14 UX425

If you measure that how fast the machine can open My documents or the web browser or open Netflix, you’re kind of setting yourself for a failure because almost every laptop whether it is i3 or i5 or i7 nowadays roughly opens My documents at the same speed, all feels snappy which is great. Performance really matters is when you do more resource-intensive activities like video editing. So, I did some editing works on this laptop. At 1080p, this laptop does a fantastic job. In video editing, there are no frame drops and it is a super smooth experience. I didn’t try 4K video editing although the processor will be fine because of the ultrabook-like body, it causes thermal throttling which means you see the occasional frame drops whilst still a workable experience, it’s not as ideal or smooth as you would like it to be.

If you’re interested in gaming, then you can definitely game on this laptop as long as you keep your expectations down. If you’re playing modern-day games, you can play those games on ultra-low or low settings to get playable frame rates in respect of 30 FPS or more.

The good performance obviously gives heat means the thermal of the laptop can be worse. In terms of thermal on average, if you’re super demanding activities on this laptop, you can hit up to 47-degree celsius. However, running a more modest or medium-to-low workload, temperatures are around 27-35 celsius which is manageable. In terms of fan noise, you only have a single fan onboard which is less than ideal. Anyway, the fan remains super quiet under a medium-to-low workload. At the highest possible speed when you’re running gaming or other works for prolonged hours, the fan noise can hit up to 37 decibels.

Asus ZenBook 14

BATTERY:

Dell Inspiron 14 7400

As it is an Evo laptop, it gives a good battery life. It gives around nine hours of battery life in general use.

Asus Zenbook 14 UX425

In terms of battery life, the numbers are all in place. So, at a 50% brightness with the low-moderate workflow, I actually got approximately 13 hours on a single charge which is pretty impressive. However, if you start doing more resource-intensive works like video editing with a mix of web browsing and media consumption, it can very quickly drop around 8 hours. If you turn the brightness on 100% and start doing heavy works, it will only give 2.5 hours. All in all, this laptop definitely capable of running throughout a whole day.

WHICH TO BUY?

The Asus Zenbook worth every penny you put on it. It has a good build quality, a nice trackpad with multi-function capabilities including a number pad sensor, and a great performance. At the end of the day, I will choose Inspiron 7400 laptop instead of Asus Zenbook 14 because the Inspiron 7400 has a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, good resolution display and also comes at less price range and the Zenbook 14 lacks these all features.
