INTRODUCTION:

This is the comparison review of HP Zbook Power G7 and Dell Precision 5550. The Zbook Power has many strong specification options under the light machine, so it works as a desktop replacement for the professionals who work on the go. The Dell Precision 5550 is the best option under $2500. If you’re looking for a mobile workstation, then the Precision 5550 is one of the best options. Let’s get into the detailed comparison.

DESIGN & BUILD:

HP Zbook Power G7

The Zbook has a military build. So, as you would expect it’s one chunky and shock-resistant computer. It has an all-aluminum case and hopefully, it’s going to last.

In terms of the keyboard, the Zbook comes with HP premium quiet keyboard. It is speed-resistant and a full-size backlit keyboard with a programmable key. It’s protected by an HP warranty for three years. The spill-resistant keyboard is super comfortable to use. The keyboard on the Zbook is simply much better than the Surface Book’s keyboard. The trackpad looks big and comfortable almost like a Mac trackpad but in real life, the trackpad is a bit smaller.

Dell Precision 15 5550

Dell has been blowing the lines between mobile workstations and high-performance consumer laptops by putting some professional-level hardware into the Precision 5550 while keeping the form factor close to the XPS 15 consumer model. The Precision 5550 is so slim, compact profile, and weighs just  4.05 pounds making it easily portable for the professional on the go.

It’s light and it’s extremely thin, so it does not have any USB ports or HDMI or anything else. We only have one Type-C 3.0 and two Thunderbolts. So, I’m pretty sure you have to buy some dongles to attach your devices.

The trackpad is very huge and it’s comfortable to use. The keyboard has very nice keys and it feels good to type. Although it’s not a mechanical keyboard, you won’t expect a mechanical keyboard in this thin laptop. The panel is made of carbon fiber, it’s pretty but the only downfall of this is that if your hands are even a little bit oily, it will leave some stains.

DISPLAY:

HP Zbook Power G7

It has a decent display. The display we have is Full HD but if you want, you can also opt for a 4K display. It has a narrow bezel, anti-reflection, and it has gorilla glass 5 and that’s all I was really interested in. It has four narrow bezels that maximize the area of the screen and you can get a 4K display if you want to.

Dell Precision 15 5550

You will love the 15.6-inch display of this Precision 5550. The display is ultra-sharp FHD+ 1920 x 1200 and supports 100% sRGB. It’s incredibly vivid and bright with great color accuracy and minimized footprints, small bezels, and all add up to an amazing viewing experience.

FEATURES:

HP Zbook Power G7

The price to spec ratio of this workstation is great. If I wanted to buy a Dell workstation with similar specs, I would have to pay about 600 dollars more instead. The Zbook comes with Intel core i7 10750H, it has a 15.6-inch screen. In terms of the graphic card, it has P1000 Max-Q. The base model only comes with 16GB of RAM.

When it comes to the ports, on the left side are one RJ45, one super speed USB Type-A, and one HDMI 2.0. On the right side, we’ve got one power connector, one Thunderbolt with super speed, one USB Type-C, two super-speed USB Type-A, and one headphone microphone combo.

There are many advantages to this workstation. The main advantage is the price point with the good specs. One of the best aspects of this workstation is that you can so easily replace and change the parts, it’s not an option in many laptops and in some other workstations. So, the fact that you can just replace the battery and add RAM if you wish to. The Zbook Power G7 also has some surprising benefits.

Dell Precision 15 5550

Despite the aesthetic similarities, you will find under the hood it’s quite different from the XPS 15 offering some solid processor power and NVIDIA Quadro graphics. This has an Intel Core i7 10th generation CPU with 16 GB DDR4 RAM, NVIDIA T1000 graphic card which has 4 GB of VRAM.

You will find the Precision 5550 falls in the middle tier of their workstations hitting the sweet spot of performance and price. You will enjoy the benefits of the latest technology of delivering optimum performance for businesses with manageability, built-in security features, and stability of Intel architecture. The Dell Optimizer for Precision 5550 is one of the biggest features that you love with its built AI platform that learns how you work and continuously adapts to your style to create a smarter, more personalized, and creative experience.

There are four speakers on this laptop, two are on the top and two are on the bottom. The sound quality of the speakers is fabulous. In terms of connectivity, it has Intel dual-band wireless ax201 2×2 plus a Bluetooth 5.1 vPro.

PERFORMANCE:

HP Zbook Power G7

The combination of the H series processor and the NVIDIA Quadro T lineup or RTX lineup of graphics works great for rendering works, 3D designing, and many more works. In Cinebench 15 CPU test, this Zbook Power with i7-10750H processor got around 1400 scores. For the graphics test, in the 3D Mark benchmark, the Quadro T1000 scored around 7820 which is a massive score. So, we can clearly see that the graphics-intensive works will get the job done fluently in this machine.

There are some disappoints in this Zbook Power. First of all, the USB ports are just so difficult to use, it is a struggle to insert and extract the USB pins, and compared to the Surface 2, it seems like a downgrade. Secondly, there’s an inexplicable fun noise going on with this workstation. I noticed that it comes from Windows defender, for some reason even though the Surface 2 defender is basically a background program but in the Power G7, it’s taking about 15% of the CPU power. I needed to change the settings to do some investigating and I was able to eliminate a part of this problem but not all of it. Basically, I had to deactivate some security settings but as you may expect that comes at the price of a security, so it’s probably not the best solution. The loud fan noise can be difficult to explain also because it doesn’t occur during complex tasks instead it starts suddenly when browsing through the web or opening a word document.

Dell Precision 15 5550

The Dell Precision 5550 has a workhorse professional graphics, fast and dependable memory that accelerates workflows and improves your response time with high-speed memory making it great for architects, video editors, programmers, and designers that needs efficient processing power. The biggest pro of this laptop is its performance and the graphics which is great for creatives and engineers.

The gaming on this laptop is pretty decent. As this is not a gaming laptop, it has a workstation graphic card which is NVIDIA Quadro T1000, so it’s a very nice graphics card for high gaming like if you want to play, you can play games on 1080p. It will start to lag if you play games on higher settings because it’s not a gaming graphic card, it’s a workstation graphic card and it can run CAD and computer-aided design software very fluently and it can edit videos.

BATTERY:

HP Zbook Power G7

The battery life is decent but not amazing. However, to be honest, I expected that the battery life is in line with the specs of this workstation but it lasts about five hours.

Dell Precision 15 5550

The Precision 5550 has two battery options that are 68 WHr and 86 WHr batteries whereas the previous gen had a battery size of 97 WHr. In real-world use, the 86 WHr battery option gives you around 9 hours of battery life.

HP ZBook Power G7

WHICH TO BUY?

The Zbook Power G7 is a very decent workstation given the price. It’s a very durable piece of equipment but other laptops seem more powerful on paper while also delivering better specs for a lower price. If you’re looking for an affordable mobile workstation without tipping over $2500, then the Dell Precision 5550 essentially takes the popular XPS 15 and packs it with some professional-level hardware that definitely hits the sweet spot of performance, portability, and price making it a great option for you.

Both of these laptops have powerful configurations and both work well. In the Precision 5550, you get some negatives like lack of ports. Overall, both the laptops are fine for high-intensive works. So, you have to decide that which one attracts you more from this detailed review.
