DESIGN

MSI GF63:

The GF63 has a black brushed aluminum lid and a brushed black plastic interior with MSI’s classic black and red theme. Overall, It has a great design. It’s stealthy, it’s sleek, and it has thin bezels which are nice. There is a metal cover on the lid which is a bit of a fingerprint magnet but looks cool. I also like the fact that the laptop is very lightweight and portable which means you can easily carry it around anywhere you want.

MSI GF75:

The whole laptop is a solid metal aluminum and it feels very strong, the whole lid is black with a red MSI logo near the top. The interior is very well built with little sharp edges and corners.

WEIGHT & DIMENSIONS

MSI GF63:

The weight is listed as 1.86KG on the MSI website, and mine unit was 1.85KG. With the power brick and cables included the total weight increases to 2.5KG. The dimensions of the laptop are 35.9cm in width, 25.4cm in depth, and 2.1cm in height.

MSI GF75:

The GF75 must be the lightest 17-inch gaming laptop I have used. The weight is 2.13KG, it’s lighter than many 15-inch ones. And when you add a charger to it, the weight raises to 2.78KG. The dimensions of the laptop are 39.7 cm (15.63 in) in width, 26 cm (10.24 in) in depth, and under 2.3 cm (0.9 in) in height, about 8% smaller than the other 17″ gaming laptops.

DISPLAY

MSI GF63:

The display here is decent as well. It’s a 15.6″ inch full HD display with a matte finish so you won’t have any clear issues while using the laptop. The display is decently bright which is nice and everything else about the display is also pretty solid. The viewing angles are nice, the colors are great with 100% sRGB coverage and text is sharp and easy to read.

MSI GF75:

The screen it is a 60Hz 17.3″ FHD 1080p, with an 88% Screen-to-Body ratio and IPS-Panel technology it is capable of showing 90% sRGB and 85% AdobeRGB. The backlight bleeding was very minor and it was not visible during work. Despite the 4 thin bezels, MSI has still included the 720p 30 FPS camera, It was very blurry when shooting close objects, but it was good when shooting far objects. And unfortunately, you cannot open the laptop with one hand as the weight of the laptop is not evenly distributed.

KEYBOARD & TOUCHPAD

MSI GF63:

In my usual everyday usage, I do spend a lot of time typing on my laptop and the MSI GF63 has a nice keyboard for everything from typing to playing games. It’s a backlit keyboard with red backlighting, so you can use it easily at night and it’s responsive with ample travel which is good to have.

The trackpad here is also decent enough, it’s not the biggest out there but it’s definitely big enough and it’s a Windows precision trackpad, so you get all the handy gestures, so that’s great too.

MSI GF75:

I love the keyboard deck. The keyboard itself is spacious for the keys painted and backlit red which is the only available color. The keys have a good feel to them and there appears to be no mention of SteelSeries here, you do have a separate number pad. I love the clean simple look though with the large power button in the center. The keyboard flex was very little and it felts very solid, you won’t see any flex during gaming or work. The trackpad is very small but it uses Windows precision drivers.

I/O

MSI GF63:

  • Leftside – There’s an air exhaust vent, the power input, and a USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A port.
  • Rightside – There are 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks, two more USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A ports, a USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C port, although no mention of Thunderbolt support, gigabit ethernet port, and Kensington lock.
  • Backside – There’s an HDMI port, version 1.2 I think as it supports 4K at 30Hz, and air exhaust vent on the right.
  • Front – The front is just smooth plastic with a little indent in the center to allow you to easily open it.

MSI GF75:

  • Leftside – There is an air exhauster, the power input, the HDMI output (4k at 30Hz), two 3.2 USB-A, and a battery LED status.
  • Rightside – There is an air exhauster, a Gigabit Ethernet connection, a 3.2 Type-C and Type-A USB, a microphone input, headphone output (both 3.5mm combo) and a Kensington lock.
  • Backside – There are two air exhausters, and underneath the laptop, there are some air intake vents.

SPEAKERS

MSI GF63:

The speakers on this are bottom-firing ones and they aren’t too loud. So if you want to watch movies or something on this, you will have to connect a Bluetooth speaker or you know just use a headset.

MSI GF75:

Speakers are positioned towards the front underneath the laptop, they can get very loud with clear sound, and the LatencyMon results did not seem very good. I will recommend to use an external speaker or headset for gaming or watching movies.

PERFORMANCE

MSI GF63:

The MSI GF63 comes with a ninth gen Core i5 processor, 8gb ram, 512 GB SSD, and Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU which is one of the latest GPU. The performance here is no issue. I played PUBG and Far Cry 5 on this laptop and both those games run really great on here. PUBG with ultra settings gets upwards of 60 to 70 FPS at all times which is great while Far Cry 5 which is definitely more demanding than PUBG gets around 45 to 50 FPS with medium graphics settings which are good enough too. The MSI GF63 is definitely good for gaming as well as everyday use.

MSI GF75:

The MSI GF75 is equipped with the latest Intel 9th generation Core processor-i5-9300H, and the latest NVIDIA Turing architecture graphics card-GeForce GTX 1650. The performance in almost every AAA title was running under 50FPS and there is no stuttering phenomenon. However, the number of frames will fluctuate greatly during scene switching. While playing Tomb Raider with high settings, the average framerate was 51 and at low settings, you can achieve up to 60FPS.

BATTERY

MSI GF63:

The MSI GF63 comes with a 51Whr battery and MSI claims that it lasts seven hours. Now I haven’t used this laptop enough to make a comment on the battery life but in my short usage, it does look decent enough.

MSI GF75:

The battery is a 3-Cell 51 Watt, by keeping the brightness 50% with closing background apps and turning better battery mode on, the laptop could stay for four hours using 24% of charge every hour while only watching Youtube and browsing. The battery reached 30% after 2 and a half hours of use on best performance mode settings and highest screen brightness while only reading and browsing.

Gaming on the battery was very bad the battery couldn’t run any HEAVY games on minimum settings smoothly. The battery reached 18% from a full charge only in 20 minutes, and then the PC turned off, because of the battery heat, very bad results for a machine that is supposed to run games on battery. The gaming experience was very good while charging with a 150 Watt AC adapter, and I never saw battery draining while charging and gaming.

WHICH IS BETTER OPTION?

MSI GF63 has a better screen than MSI GF75. Now the speakers of both the laptops are below average. If you need a 17-inch screen of average gaming and everyday use then you should choose MSI GF75. And If you’re just after a budget gaming laptop then I will recommend you to buy MSI GF63.
