Overall, there isn’t much to be said about the Dell G3 15 3579. It didn’t surprise us with anything special, however, it also didn’t let us down on any occasion. It has a decent cooling system thus good performance. Battery life is excellent providing 5-6 hours of browsing and watching videos and almost two hours of gaming, although we would recommend carrying the charger when gaming.

DESIGN

MSI Alpha 15:

The laptop definitely looks like it is built for gamers. On top of the panel we get to see two ridges like spines and in the middle, there is a phoenix emblem and that looks a little different. The laptop doesn’t look very thin. The panel is reasonably stiff and it feels like it’s made of aluminum and it has got thin bezels with a webcam on the top.

Dell G3 15:

This laptop is entirely made of plastic and almost all the devices in the G series are like this. It has a blue theme going through the whole device. So the keyboard has the blue striping pattern going through which I don’t think looks good. And it cheapens the aesthetic of the laptop, it’s not like I don’t like the blue color in fact I love blue color but this particular pattern makes it look a little cheap.

The top deck is the satin blue finish which I do like the look and the “DELL” logo is that metallic blue which also looks cool and I like it as well.

The build quality is actually pretty good and there are no weak spots in the chassis and the hinges feels well made. The top panel looks really good but nothing crazy. It’s not an aluminum body it’s built well. The bottom panel has the same kind of finish as the top it’s the same satin blue. So, it’s the very uniform look to the whole device and the one thing to notice is that it’s thinner than MSI Alpha 15.

KEYBOARD & TOUCHPAD

MSI Alpha 15:

The keyboard deck looks like it is made of aluminum metal. It’s silver in color and it looks fairly nice. The windows precision trackpad is smooth and has a smooth texture. The mouse buttons are of course separate and quite clicky so you will be able to hear them. The keyboard itself is very nice and in very nice RGB. It is a SteelSeries keyboard and you also have brightness controls for the screen and volume controls. The separate number pad is also there and of course, we have a power button and with that, we also have a button to control the light patterns of the keyboard and along with that we also have a button for the turbofan.

According to me, Steelseries has some of the best RGB lightings on any laptop and if we press the switch for lighting we get to see different lighting patterns and all the patterns are very nice.

Dell G3 15:

The keyboard has a good layout and I actually like this keyboard and I would like to say that this is it’s the biggest strength and I think most of the people are going to like this keyboard. The trackpad uses windows precision drivers and it has good tracking but the surface, it’s not my favourite it’s just like textured plastic.

DISPLAY:

MSI Alpha 15:

Here, the display has three IPS options and those are 120 Hz, 144 Hz, and supposedly 240 Hz. MSI Alpha 15 only has 278 nits of brightness and the contrast ratio is 460:1. And it has a processing time of 3 ms.

Dell G3 15:

The display is a bit mediocre type and at $750 we should not expect too much but this screen is not bright nor color accurate but I am comfortable playing games on this.

Speakers:

MSI Alpha 15:

The speakers on this laptop are at the bottom and got two, 2-watt speakers. It produces 72 decibels of sound and it’s not bad and I definitely recommend you to update the drive because initially, the sound was very tinny even through the headphones weren’t good but now after updating the drive it is much better.

Dell G3 15:

The speakers are located on the bottom front of the laptop and they are just “OK” and they are not the most amazing laptop speakers the sound was very generic but they didn’t disappoint me.

PERFORMANCE

MSI Alpha 15:

In-game benchmarks, it doesn’t live up to its full potential. When playing Assasin Creed the CPU was being the bottleneck. It was struggling to give a good gaming performance. So basically your actual gaming experience will vary a lot when playing the game.

Dell G3 15:

The performance on this deviceis my biggest concern and it’s runnig on the 1050 Ti. It not the most powerful configuration and the thermals are hot as well. It’s doesn’t throttle and the fan noise is not that too loud or anything but I do wish that the temperatures are a little bit lower and you could replace this you revolt this but at stock I don’t love those temperatures.

BATTERY:

MSI Alpha 15:

It has a battery of 51Wh and a power adapter of 180-watt and it gives battery life from somewhere around 3 to 4 hours. It might last up to 5 to 6 hours if the brightness is a little low.

Dell G3 15:

It also has a 51 Wh of battery and a power adapter of 130-watt. It has got an impressive battery life. After continuously surfing the web over wi-fi at 150 nits of brightness. It lasted for almost 7 hours.

PORT SELECTION

MSI Alpha 15:

The Alpha 15 is not that thin like the other laptops. So, on the right side, we two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, an SD card slot and that is nice to have and the card goes most of the ways in and we also have the power connector for the power of course.

On the left-hand side, we have separate headphone and microphone jack which is very nice to have, we also have USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port, there is also a third 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, a mini display port, HDMI 2.0, Ethernet Jack heat exhaust and the lock slot as well.

On the back of the laptop, we have two big heat sinks with a red accent in the middle.

Dell G3 15:

Dell’s G3 15 is thinner than Alpha 15. On the right side, we have got a lock slot, two USB 2.0 ports, and an SD card slot and as I said it’s nice to have an SD card slot. On the left side, we have a headphone jack, an Ethernet port, a USB 3.1 port, an HDMI 2.0 port, one USB Type-C display port, and a power connector, of course. The back of G3 15 is totally clean.

WEIGHT & DIMENSIONS

MSI Alpha 15:

Its weight is 5 pounds and 1 ounce/2.3 kg and with the power cable total weight is 6 pounds 11 ounces/3.03 kg. The dimensions of the laptop are 14.1 x 9.8 x 1 inch.

Dell G3 15:

It weighs somewhere around 5.4 pounds/ 2.4 kg and with the power cable it total weight becomes somewhere around 6.5 pounds/ 3.06 kg. The dimension of this are 14.4 x 10 x 0.9 inches.

Which One Should You Buy?

For me, I would definitely go for Dell G3 15 ad MSI Alpha 15 not that good. The display is not good, the battery life is not that good, keyboard build quality is not that good as well. So for MSI Alpha 15 is a no go.
