Although the RTX 3070 has 8GB of GDDR6 memory compared to the RX 6700M’s 10GB, Nvidia’s memory has a higher bandwidth and a bigger memory bus. Although CUDA cores and stream processors aren’t exactly comparable, the 6700M has a greater maximum power limit. The RX 6700M is rated at up to 135 watts on AMD’s spec sheet, while the 3070 is rated at up to 125 watts on Nvidia’s.
PERFORMANCE: RX 6700M VS RTX 3070
The game’s benchmark was used to test Red Dead Redemption 2. The 6700M is off to a terrific start here, outperforming the 3070 at both resolutions by about 2 to 3 frames per second.
In Cyberpunk 2077, the RTX 3070 has a noticeable advantage, with a 12 percent higher average FPS at 1080p and a 13 percent higher average FPS at 1440p.
I was curious to see how Watch Dogs Legion would perform, given the game’s benchmark states that the 3070’s 8GB of VRAM is barely just enough to get by at maximum settings. Despite the 6700M’s 10GB of VRAM, the 3070 was still able to achieve a 12 percent better average FPS at both resolutions.
At 1080p, the 3070 has a 12.9 % higher average frame rate in Microsoft Flight Simulator. At 1440p, the difference increases, with 3070 achieving a 22 % higher average FPS.
In Call of Duty Warzone, the differences were significantly closer together. In both resolutions, the 3070 and 6700M differ by only 1 to 2 frames per second.
In comparison to most other games I’ve reviewed, you could argue that greater frame rate is more crucial in Fortnite as an eSports title. The 3070 outperformed the 6700M by 20% at 1080p and 19% at 1440p, indicating that it performs better on Nvidia hardware.
VRAM DIFFERENCE: RX 6700M VS RTX 3070
When it comes to VRAM, the 3070’s 8GB appears to be sufficient, even at the higher 1440p resolution. Years from now, the 10GB in the 6700M might start closing the gap, but it’s impossible to say.
DRIVER STABILITY: RX 6700M VS RTX 3070
The RTX 3070 outperforms the RX 6700M, but it doesn’t mean the 6700M isn’t good. As we’ve seen, it handled all of these newer games flawlessly at higher resolutions of 1080p and 1440p. There were no driver crashes or other issues, and both were steady in all of the games I tried.
CONCLUSION: RX 6700M VS RTX 3070
Is it really worth it to pay 25% extra for a 12% increase in games on average? Perhaps not. However, if the prices were closer together, the 3070 would be a lot more appealing because it performs better in almost all of the workloads. Of course there’s way more to buying a laptop than just the GPU that’s inside.
