INTRODUCTION:
Dell G5 15 SE 5505
This is their entry to mid-level gaming laptop but this time we have AMD inside not just Intel and AMD for the graphics too. The Combination of AMD Ryzen processor and AMD RX Radeon GPU works really well in gaming. You will get surprised by the performance of it.
HP Omen 15
HP Omen 15 is a mid-range gaming laptop that has both AMD and Intel-based processor models, you can choose any one of them. Nowadays, even the AMD processor works better than the Intel in some games according to the processor models. So, the HP Omen 15 AMD version performs really well in gaming.
DESIGN:
Dell G5 15 SE 5505
In this price range, you get a plastic or polycarbonate casing, no surprise there, and a design that’s not super inspired but goes with the G tradition. The sidelines with the taper on all that sort of thing look pretty good and you’ve got the typical Dell G series back with pronounced grill markings.
There are two varieties of the keyboard. They have red backlit and there’s the zone RGB backlit and it’s a pretty comfortable keyboard considering the fact that this is not a particularly thick laptop by gaming laptop standards. It’s nice key travel, a good tactile feel, it’s actually pleasant to type on and you can light up your zones anywhere you want. The trackpad is Microsoft precision and it works fine. The right-click zone seems to be a little bit far towards the right side but that’s a minor complaint.
HP Omen 15
The design of the HP Omen looks so stylish and it doesn’t look like a gaming laptop. The build quality is also pretty good on this laptop. The whole laptop has a matte black finish on it which looks fashionable not like a gaming laptop.
There is a small gap between the laptop when it is closed, and that is absolutely fine, you don’t have to worry about its build quality and all. In our test, I found that it’s better for airflow when a laptop is closed.
The keyboard has RGB lighting on it which is the only thing that makes the sense that it’s a gaming laptop. The keys have nice travel and there is not much space between the keys but it’s fine for typing and gaming.
DISPLAY:
Dell G5 15 SE 5505
For displays, you have two options. I highly suggest you get the better of the two. They’re both Full HD matte non-touch IPS displays but the base model is 60 hertz and 220 nits and probably has a lower color gamut but the one that we have and it’s not a big upcharge that one’s 300 nits which are always better brighter and also it has pretty good color. You’ve got your full sRGB color coverage, good contrast on it. It’s a pleasing display which is good to see because the G series from Dell used to be really mediocre displays. So, this one’s good and this one gives the Asus TUF A15 to run for its money because that one has AMD inside too and it’s a competitor with this but not the greatest full HD display.
HP Omen 15
The HP Omen AMD model has a 144hz display, it looks exactly the same as the Intel one. You’d get really good color accuracy, fine enough to do design work on it but most importantly, it’s good enough for gaming. The only downfall to this display is not the brightest, 283 nits is fine for indoors but if you’re going to be using this outside, you might find it a bit dim.
FEATURES:
Dell G5 15 SE 5505
The G5 SE stands for special edition starts around 800 dollars on Dell’s website that gives you the Ryzen competitor to a core i5 H-series processor which would be the Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB of Ram and a 256 GB SSD NVMe and a Full HD display which is your only option. Our unit is around 1130 and we have the better Ryzen 7 4800H which is competitive with the Core i7 and you get 16 GB of Ram 512 GB SSD and no matter which one you get, you’re going to get the same AMD Radeon RX 5600M GPU which does interesting things with the AMD CPU, they have this thing called “powershift”. So, they can dynamically shift how much power is going to the CPU versus the GPU. It’s a separate dedicated GPU but they treat it a little bit sort of like what they call their APU with the integrated graphics to manage that. The audio on this is surprisingly good for a 15-inch mid-ranging gaming laptop, nice and loud, and actually has some bass.
The ports on this are pretty good. You have USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 was an intel thing but now anybody can actually use it, so we’ll start to see this with AMD more often but in this price range, you don’t get Thunderbolt 3 anyway. We have three USB A ports, two of them are USB 2.0 and the other one is USB 3. If you’re just plugging in an external keyboard and mouse and it really doesn’t matter when you have 2.0 or 3.0, you don’t need a high-speed connection for keyboards and mice. Still, you have both HDMI 2.0 and a mini display port, an sd card slot, so the ports are pretty good on this. For wi-fi, you have your choice of getting either a Wi-Fi-5 card with Bluetooth 4.2 or you can get the Killer Wi-Fi-6 card which uses an Intel chip.
The internals on this is pretty expandable which is good to see. You’ve got two Ram slots, two M.2 SSD slots. The heatsink is readily accessible if you want to paste it and all that sort of stuff, so good on the internals. Internally, we have two fans as per usual and CPU and GPU, and a decent number of heat pipes. We have two ram slots. This being an AMD Zen 2 CPU, this uses DDR4 3200 megahertz Ram faster than average, faster than what Intel uses. So, if you decide to upgrade it afterward keep that in mind and buy the right ram. There is a Wi-Fi 6 Killer card and you’ve got two M.2 SSD slots. There’s a seven millimeter 2.5-inch hard drive bay. So, for those who are trying to decide between getting this with Intel or with AMD inside, I would lean towards AMD because they’re doing such a good job, you get stronger performance in CPU and the thermals are pretty good.
HP Omen 15
Internally, exactly the same layout as the Intel model of HP Omen. You have your two storage slots, one is populated it’s very fast, the second is empty for future upgrades. There is a swappable RAM of up to 64 gigabytes and a swappable Wi-Fi 6 card.
We all may know that the webcam on gaming laptops absolutely bad but the sound is also the same as the Intel model, it’s fine. It’s coming out of the speakers on the bottom, it’s not going to blow you away but it’s loud enough to play games.
PERFORMANCE:
Dell G5 15 SE 5505
In terms of performance, AMD CPUs have been rocking it this year. It uses less heat, it performs better. For example, with the 4800H, you’ve got an eight-core versus Intel six core and the i7 as a competition, there’s a more expensive intel eight-core i7 as well. So, the CPU performance on this is excellent not quite as good as the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14.
There is the Dell G7 button, you can turn on max mode which means max noise and max frames in your game. In terms of benchmarks and actual gaming frames on this, it’s very competent and very smooth and AMD’s drivers have come a long way. This one played every game I threw out very smoothly on higher ultra settings at 1080p resolution which is what you get with this built-in display more like the GTX 1660 Ti though. It does approach the RTX 2060 Max-Q in some games in terms of frame rates.
HP Omen 15
This is an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H CPU. You pair this with 16 gigabytes of RAM and a GTX 1660 Ti and you have a very well-rounded laptop that can push nice frames between medium and high settings. Now, if you’re a developer, this is also a very important laptop like this eight-core CPU crashed Mozilla Firefox compile test in just 29 minutes beating out most other Intel laptops on the market.
The Legion AMD was hitting 100 to 105 degrees celsius while this laptop never surpasses 86 to 88 degrees celsius and this is lower than what the Intel model can do like the Intel model was getting like 96 degrees. So, this CPU, the five-nanometer architecture inside of here is a lot cooler than the Intel model and a lot cooler than the Lenovo model. Fan noise is also on par with the Intel version. You’re looking at about 55 to 56 decibels when the fans are high performing in but overall, it’s very typical for a gaming laptop.
BATTERY:
Dell G5 15 SE 5505
Don’t expect too much in battery life. Radeon has been perfect in the Zen 2 architecture with battery life, but they’ve only put a 51-watt hour battery in here. So, you will get about the same battery capacity you would see in the Dell XPS 13.
You do have switchable graphics, you can use the equivalent AMD integrated graphics on this and doesn’t have to use the dedicated GPU all the time, but it’s going to depend on what you’re doing, but with the display set at 150 nits of brightness, if you’re doing light to moderate productivity work and streaming some video, it will give you about 4 to 5 hours.
HP Omen 15
The battery is what really surprised me like this is the same 70-watt hour battery that’s inside the Intel model. You can get almost six hours of battery use, this beat out the Intel version, the Lenovo Legion 5, and the Acer Predator Helios 300.
WHICH TO BUY?
The combination of AMD CPU and GPU really works great for the price. The gaming performance is really great in Dell G5 15 SE gaming laptop. The HP AMD model hits everything like better temperatures, faster CPU performance, and longer battery life. I think if you’re looking for the best balance of everything and HP did a fantastic job with the AMD version. If you want more cooling and stylish design laptop with performance, then HP Omen 15 is the good one to buy. If you only focus on the performance, then Dell’s G5 SE version will be the better one.
