Introduction

The HP OMEN 17 and the MSI GE75 RAIDER are pretty powerful laptops and both of these devices have got pretty similar specs and also the price is very similar as well. So here, we have written a review that clarifies the difference between both of these devices.

Design

HP OMEN 17 (Intel)

The updated Omen 17 is 22% thinner and 15% lighter than its previous version. But it’s still a pretty thick and heavy device and you are definitely going to feel this device while carrying it with you. The device does look modern and it definitely gives the vibes of a gaming laptop.

This device has got smart aluminum chassis, thinner bezels and also a small logo on the back. The keyboard is backlit and we do get RGB but it’s limited to four zones including the “WASD” keys. There is a row of macro keys on the left which is handy and also we get a proper number pad on the right side as well.

Here, we also get to see a good size precision trackpad which feels smooth and responsive. It also has got separate click buttons as well.

MSI GE75 RAIDER

The lid of the MSI GE75 is made up of metal, the interior is also the same but the bottom panel is made of plastic. The overall build quality of the device is just fine but it’s good than most of the laptops out there. The weight of the MSI GE75 is 2.66 kg which is less than the weight of the HP OMEN 17. Also, this device is bit thinner than HP OMEN 17 but you might not be able to differentiate between these two devices.

Display

HP OMEN 17 (Intel)

The Omen 17 has got a matte display and even with light directly reflecting on the screen it’s still viewable. This display is 17-inch Full HD IPS panel, it doesn’t look too good. But it’s still a good display for gaming and it does look good while playing the games. Now, this display also supports a 144 Hz refresh rate which is nice for gaming and games do look quite smooth as well.

Here, we also get to see G-sync which helps to reduce screen tearing and also smoothens the FPS at a low frame rate. This display is really good for gaming and with the IPS panel, this display looks very nice.

MSI GE75 RAIDER

The MSI GE75 has also got 17-inch screen with 144 Hz refresh rate but it doesn’t support G-sync like the HP OMEN 17. But it’s good enough for photo editing. The brightness of the display is nice and it’s also quite visible in the broad daylight but not under the direct sunlight.

Now, if we talk about the games colors are accurate, contrast is nice and also the games look nice as well. The other good thing about this display is that the bezels are thinned out to give the device a sleeker look

Features

HP OMEN 17 (Intel)

Now, I think it’s safe to say that, half the chassis is taken up with cooling vents. This device can have either RTX 2060, RTX 2070, or RTX 2080 and there is no max-q with these cards. Here on this device, I have got RTX 2070 which is 30 to 35% faster than the RTX 2070 max-q.

This device has got GeForce RTX 2070, Intel i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage and 1 TB hard drive as well. Now, at the time of writing this article it costs around 1700 USD and if you go for lower variant than you will not get G-sync with it.

Here, we have got bang & Olufsen speakers on the side and below which are loud and clear. Also, the bass is decent considering that it’s a laptop. The Omen 17 gets Wi-Fi 6 support which means with a compatible router you should be able to get faster but more importantly reliable internet.

This device has also got good range of ports. Here, we get three USB 3.1 Type-A port, one USB 3.2 Gen-2 Type-C port, HDMI, mini display port, an SD card reader and a mic and headphone jack as well.

MSI GE75 RAIDER

This device has got Intel i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2060 and 512 GB of SSD. Now, this device cost me around 1400 USD but if you want to go for the higher variant than it will cost you around 1900 USD which is a little expensive in my opinion.

The speakers are placed on the bottom of the device. The sound produced from these speakers is loud and from these four speakers two are subwoofers. These speaker produce very high sound and it’s also very crispy as well. But inspite of high sound it doesn’t have proper bass and also there is a bit of echo effect because these speakers are located on the bottom of the device.

This device has got ports like noble lock, RJ45 port, HDMI, mini display port, USB 2.0, USB type-C (no thunderbolt 3), and the headphone and microphone jack. On the right side we get to see two more USB 3.0 ports, full size SD card slot and the charging port as well.

Performance

HP OMEN 17 (Intel)

Now, the gaming on the new Omen 17 is great and I got 135 FPS in overwatch with medium to high settings and the game looks very nice. Some other games like Apex Legends, I got 144 FPS with medium settings and with that as well the game looks pretty good. In the new rate racing game control, I saw an average of 85 FPS with medium to high settings with rate racing and RSS. Battlefield 5 with high-settings, rate racing, and RSS on gave me an average of 80 FPS which is pretty good.

MSI GE75 RAIDER

The performance of the device is nice especially while playing the games but it does suffer with the benchmarks. However, there are no issues while playing the games and also I didn’t notice any drop frames as well. Also, it didn’t get very hot like 50-degree Celsius but it did get hot up to 44-degrees.

The performance for gaming is really nice but it does get very hot as well while playing the games.

Battery life

HP OMEN 17 (Intel)

The battery life of the Omen 17 is a little bit behind which is not surprising as the specs are really good. For gaming, I got a battery life of somewhere around an hour but for normal usage, it lasted for somewhere around three to four hours which is fine. But they could have definitely improved the battery life a little bit.

MSI GE75 RAIDER

The MSI GE75 has got a 51-watt hour battery which is very less and I would recommend not to expect a huge battery life from this device. It might last for 3 to 4 hours with normal usage. But the battery life also depends on some other factors like its usage and the environment around it.

Which one should you Buy?

Now, If I need to buy one of these devices then I would definitely go for the HP OMEN 17 which is a good device for gaming, video editing, and some other things like that. The display of the device is also nice and the games also look quite nice as well. The design is nice and the performance of the device is also nice as well. However, the MSI GE75 Raider is also nice but the only problem I have with this device is the battery life is a little small and it can’t last for long. But other than that the performance of the device is nice and games also run smoothly as well. The display and the design of the device is also quite nice as well.
