If you are thinking of buying an RTX 4070 laptop, then I would advise you to save some money and buy an RTX 3070 Ti laptop instead, as there isn’t much of a difference between the two. I know you may not believe me, so in this post, I will share benchmarks of 9 games that I tested at 1080p and 1440p resolutions.
RTX 4070 vs 3070 Ti: Specifications
|RTX 3070 Ti||RTX 4070|
|GPU||GA104 – 8NM||AD106 – 4NM|
|MEMORY||8GB GDDR6||8GB GDDR6|
|MEMORY SPEED||14 GBPS||16 GBPS|
|MEM BANDWIDTH||448 GB/S||256 GB/S|
|RELEASE DATE||FEB 2022||FEB 2023|
Both laptops have the same 8GB GDDR6 memory, but the new RTX 4070 has half the memory interface and less memory bandwidth. Surprisingly, when looking at the CUDA Cores, the RTX 3070 Ti has more than the RTX 4070, despite the fact that the RTX 4070 is based on the new Ada architecture.
RTX 4070 vs 3070 Ti: Laptops Tested
|Acer Nitro 5 – RTX 3070 Ti||Gigabyte Aorus 15X – RTX 4070|
|Intel Core i7-12700H||Intel Core i9-13900HX|
|16GB RAM||16GB RAM|

My RTX 4070 laptop is paired with Intel’s 13th gen Core i9-13900HX, while my RTX 3070 Ti has the 12th gen Core i7-12700H, so the 13th gen CPU has more cores, threads, and cache.
I made a considerable effort to search for a RTX 3070 Ti Laptop equipped with a 12th generation HX processor, as that would make the comparison fair. However, even without that, the Acer Nitro 5 with the RTX 3070 Ti is still a fantastic performer.
RTX 4070 vs 3070 Ti: Performance
Now, I am going to share gaming benchmarks that were tested at 1080p and 1440p resolutions.
First up is Hogwarts Legacy, which was tested in Hogsmeade. Unfortunately, the 4070 laptop didn’t perform well, with only about a 4 FPS increase at both resolutions.
When it comes to Cyberpunk 2077 with ultra settings, the differences between the two resolutions are even smaller, with only a 1 FPS difference either way, resulting in more or less the same performance for both.
Games such as Dying Light 2 demonstrated superior performance on the older RTX 3070 Ti laptop at both resolutions.
Dead Space was doing worse on the 4070 too. Although the average frame rates were similar at 1080p, the 4070 laptop experienced more instances of performance drops, as shown by the 1% lows.
Microsoft’s Flight Simulator exhibited improved performance on the 4070, although the difference was only around 3-4 FPS. Given that this game is recognized for its heavy CPU usage, it is challenging to ascertain how much of the difference is solely attributable to the transition from a 12th to 13th generation CPU.
In A Plague Tale Requiem, there was minimal variance between the two laptops, and any differences would likely go unnoticed during actual gameplay.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered demonstrated significant performance improvements on the 4070 laptop at 1080p, but as this game relies heavily on CPU performance, I suspect that the difference is more likely due to the upgrade from a 12th generation H to a 13th generation HX processor. At 1440p, where GPU limitations are more likely to impact performance, no variance was observed between the two laptops.
In Apex Legends, there was negligible difference between the two laptops, with only a 3 FPS variance.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 exhibited a slightly greater performance advantage on the 4070, with a difference of approximately 5 FPS at 1080p and 3 FPS at 1440p. However, these variances are insignificant.
RTX 4070 vs 3070 Ti: Price Difference
As of the time of writing, the Acer Nitro 5 featuring RTX 3070 Ti graphics that was evaluated in this post is priced at $1800 USD, while the Gigabyte Aorus 15X is available for $2100 USD.
Prices of both laptops will change over time, so refer the links below:
- Acer Nitro 5 – Latest Price
- Gigabyte Aorus 15X – Latest Price
Given these prices, it is unsurprising that the RTX 4070 laptop, which is more expensive but offers similar performance, has a considerably lower value in terms of cost per frame.
RTX 4070 vs 3070 Ti: Conclusion
There is a $300 price difference between the two laptops, and if you are looking for a laptop specifically for gaming, I would recommend purchasing an RTX 3070 Ti laptop and saving your money. However, if you need to run CPU-heavy applications and also plan on gaming, then you should consider getting an RTX 4070 laptop.
