Nvidia RTX 4080 vs 3080 Ti: Laptop GPU Comparison

Nvidia RTX 4080 gaming laptops are extremely expensive, but I feel the last generation’s RTX 3080 Ti laptops provide better value. So, today I have compared a RTX 4080 laptop with a RTX 3080 Ti laptop to see the difference.

RTX 4080 vs 3080 Ti: Specifications

Both laptops have the same CUDA cores, but boost clock is higher in RTX 4080. One thing to note is that last year’s RTX 3080 Ti has more GDDR6 memory, memory interface, and memory bandwidth, but the memory speed is higher in RTX 4080.

RTX 4080 laptops are very slim this year because the 4080 can run on a lower power limit. However, both the RTX 4080 and the RTX 3080 Ti have a maximum power limit of 150 watts.

Intel HX CPUs are found in laptops, but the RTX 4080 is paired with a newer 13th-generation chip with more cores and faster memory. Due to this difference alone, there will be a slight difference in performance.

RTX 4080 vs 3080 Ti: Gaming Performance

I have tested 7 games at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions. Let’s look at the benchmarks.

Plague Tale: Requiem is a GPU-intensive game, and both laptops were able to run the game smoothly at 1440p and 1080p resolutions. However, the game was playable at 4K resolution, but it wasn’t as enjoyable. Therefore, I would suggest that you play this game at 1440p resolution.

Apex Legends was tested in the firing range for reproducible results, and while the FPS numbers might not mirror actual gameplay, they still show us that the RTX 4080 laptop was about 26% faster at 1080p and 1440p resolutions. The gap gets smaller at 4K though, with the 4080 18% ahead.

Call of Duty was tested using the game’s benchmark. At 1080p and 1440p resolutions, the RTX 4080 was 29% faster than the RTX 3080 Ti. And if you play this game at 4K resolution, the RTX 4080 is the better choice because it was giving more than 60FPS.

Now, Spider-Man is a CPU-intensive game, and the Razor Blade laptop has a 13th generation CPU, which is why RTX 4080 has more FPS. Overall, there is no difference in gameplay, and both laptops were delivering more than 60FPS at 4K resolution.

Like Spider-Man, Microsoft Flight Simulator is also a CPU-intensive game. When I played this game, I didn’t notice any significant difference, and there was only 15-20 FPS difference at all resolutions, likely due to the RTX 4080 being paired with a 13th generation CPU and the RTX 3080 Ti being paired with a 12th generation CPU.

Dead Space is one of my favorite games, and to be honest, I didn’t see much difference while playing it on both laptops. But I was shocked when I looked at the FPS difference between the two. RTX 4080 was winning in all resolutions, at 1080p and 1440p, it was 26% ahead, and at 4K, it was 18%.

I enjoyed playing Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p resolution, but I had even more fun when I switched to 1440p resolution because it was still giving around 60FPS, which is a playable framerate. At 4K resolution, results were not great on either laptop, but you can improve FPS by using features like DLSS and FSR.

RTX 4080 vs 3080 Ti: Content Creation

It’s not like everyone will buy a laptop for gaming, so before reaching to conclusion, let’s take a look at content creator workloads.

There is a significant performance gap in Blender, as you can see in the image above. The RTX 4080 laptop is outperforming the RTX 3080 Ti laptop in every test.

The RTX 4080 is around 40% faster in CUDA tests, even though both GPUs have the same amount of CUDA cores. While the ray tracing test was scoring around 30% higher on the 4080.

In this test, the RTX 4080 was ahead by only 6%. And I think it’s due to processor difference in both laptops, one has 12th gen CPU and the other has 13th gen CPU.

RTX 4080 vs 3080 Ti: Price Difference

The Lenovo Legion 7i with RTX 3080 Ti and i9-12900HX processor is currently priced at $3040, while the Razer Blade 18 with RTX 4080 and i9-13950HX processor is priced at $3799. RTX 4080 vs 3080 Ti: Conclusion

There is a price difference of $600-800 between the two laptops, and personally, I think the newer features offered by the RTX 40 series, such as DLSS 3 frame generation, are a nice addition.

If you already have an RTX 30 series laptop that is capable of modern gaming at 1080p and 1440p resolutions, then I don’t think you need to upgrade to the RTX 40 series laptop.

RTX 4080 series laptops were recently launched, so there’s a high chance that RTX 3080 Ti laptops will go on sale, and I would recommend taking advantage of the sale and saving money. But if you really need a high-end laptop for gaming and content creation and money is not a problem for you, then go with an RTX 4080 laptop.
