INTRODUCTION:

HP Omen 17 (Intel)

Most people say that this laptop has a robust build and packing amazing hardware setup for a good price. For the most part, it is true. The performance of this laptop is really well.

Dell G7 17 7700

This laptop has a stunning gaming laptop design with RGB lighting. The look and feel of it will define that as a gaming laptop. This 17-inch gaming laptop doesn’t have a good cooling solution with its design but the performance of it is pretty good but not the temperatures.

HP OMEN 17

DESIGN:

HP Omen 17 (Intel)

The HP omen offers a full keyboard with RGB lightning and offers six customizable buttons right on the left side. You can, of course, change the colors and you do that through the Omen Command Center and there you can customize the RGB lighting. I love the default position and colors. You can also customize these macro keys. The other cool thing is typing experience, it’s not noisy, they do provide the right resistance as you type in and the travel distance between them is just really on point.

Dell G7 17 7700

The device for its price point definitely exuded the level of quality that I expected and the hinge was actually really nice. It has this really nice opening effect, I love the way the hinge works on this laptop and it felt super sturdy.

The keyboard had a lot of travel. So, people who like keyboards with a lot of travel will probably enjoy typing on this keyboard more. We do have a very roomy windows precision trackpad and it was definitely a pleasure to use.

DISPLAY:

HP Omen 17 (Intel)

This laptop has a crazy beautiful screen which is very bright and it is 17 inch IPS full HD display. I love the screen because it is big, clear, roomy for productive work, and also a gaming. It has a 144-hertz refresh rate which is awesome for gaming. It has g-sync compatibility and the brightness of the screen is on point. The maximum brightness measures at 355 nits right in the middle of the screen and the contrast ratio is set at 1500 by 1, all this means that you experience a bright display even outside. This display offers 98% of the sRGB color spectrum which provides a vibrant image and scores 1.91 in Delta E for color accuracy which is outstanding. Every score below 2.0 is just perfect and this scores 1.91 considering it’s a gaming laptop. I find this one having an awesome panel considering built for gaming in mind.

Dell G7 17 7700

There is only one option in the display of this G7 7700, it has 144 hertz 1080P with an eye-safe technology display. The viewing angles are good as a gaming laptop. Dell claims 300 nits brightness but it gives around 330 nits of brightness which is plenty for gaming. This display covers 90% of sRGB, even though it’s not 100%, it looks good in color gamut and color profile.

FEATURES:

HP Omen 17 (Intel)

The model that I’ve got for comparison is with an i7 9th gen 9750H 6 core CPU, 32 gigabytes of Ram DDR4 2666 megahertz of speed, GPU RTX 2070 full size, and 2.5 SATA 1 terabyte of storage. I love the fact that you can add up to three storage drives.

On the left side, you get two audio jacks, the mic socket and the speaker or headphone socket, you get one USB Type-C port with thunderbolt power, two USB 3.2 gen1 Type-A ports, a mini display port, an HDMI 2.0, RJ45 port, and a charging plug power port. On the right side, there’s also another USB Type-A port 3.2 gen 1 and an SD card reader.

The drawback is the speakers which are located right on the bottom. It has two speakers from Bang and Olufsen and they are not loud enough and also small. If you do open the Omen audio control, you can actually select the output and of course, you can increase all frequencies if you want to compensate for some more volume right off the laptop. If you actually use headphones or external speakers, you’ll be completely fine because they draw a lot of power and you’ll have plenty of volumes. The modes between voice, movie, and music really work as expected.

Dell G7 17 7700

This Dell G7 variant that I have here for comparison is with a 17.3 inch 1080p IPS panel with a 300Hz refresh rate, an Intel core i7 10750H with 16 gigabytes of DDR4 Ram, an NVIDIA RTX 2070 that is a non Max-Q edition. So, this is a full RTX 2070 and a 512-gigabyte NVMe SSD.

The speakers on the Dell G7 were quite nice. They got two very satisfactory levels of volume however other laptops like the HP Omen 15 and the Asus TUF A15, both of those laptops definitely were able to get louder than this. We do have a gigabit LAN, USB 3, HDMI, a mini display port, and then a USB 3.0 port. Along the left side of the chassis, we have our DC barrel power connector followed by an additional USB 3.0 port and headphone jack and along the other side of the chassis, we have an SD card reader and one more USB 3.0 slot.

PERFORMANCE:

HP Omen 17 (Intel)

In terms of gaming, this laptop delivers high fps performance at least on the games that I have tested so far like Battlefield 5 got 90 fps, Call of Duty got Black Ops 3 got 95 fps, CS: GO got around 145 fps. I did tests on multiplayer games like Age of Empires 2 got 145 fps, Ryse Son of Rome got around 130 fps, Assassin’s creed around 60 fps, GTA 5 got 120 fps, and Crash Bandicoot got 60 fps. I truly do enjoy gaming on this laptop because everything plays so smoothly, frames are very constant and the best part is that this laptop just doesn’t hit much. I’ve also played while connecting the laptop to a 4K resolution monitor and the experience with frame rates even in 4K was stunning. All games peaking at 60Hz which was the limit refresh rate in that monitor. So, when it comes to gaming, this machine does the job at its best.

I did a Blackmagic Raw speed test where you can tell that the RTX 2070 GPU card is well capable of handling high resolutions. I can add it on DaVinci Resolve playback very smoothly since it also pulls a lot of power from the GPU which is great. I do color editing with ease and rendering while feeling confident that everything will respond well and the 32 gigabytes that I have installed is just great because it helps me with multitasking.

In terms of a cooling system, this laptop doesn’t get very hot which’s a big bonus. They usually hit 65 up to 85 degrees celsius when rendering or gaming. The area that gets hotter is in the upper middle part but in general, this laptop handles heat very well because of the two huge fans which are right on the bottom that guarantee an awesome airflow. The air vent on the right side is where heat gets away, so you might feel it on your hand while playing a game if your hand is level with the air vent and the other air vent is right on the rear upper side, it is very important to give your laptop space to breathe, especially when dealing with intensive processing tasks such as rendering or playing hard hardcore games.

Dell G7 17 7700

The performance of the Dell G7, I was not happy with it. I got fewer number fps in all the games, especially in ultra settings. Even while tweaking games down to their absolute minimum low in all graphics and texture settings, I was still not exceeding about 150 frames per second.

The Dell G7 has their Alienware Command Center which gives you lots of settings and tweaks and controls over the device’s performance and they also have their boost overclock button. So, you can click this Alienware looking button towards the top left corner of the keyboard deck, you get a nice fancy light show every time you press it, and then the laptop is supposedly kicking into turbo or boost mode with higher clock speeds and higher fan profiles. When I pressed this button, I did get usually a boost in frame rate it was actually noticeable but the problem was for some reason every five or ten minutes or so, the in-game frame rate would drop to 10 to 15 frames per second. This was happening in every single game that I played, it was just overheating. It couldn’t handle the heat and the only way that I found that I was able to recover from this frame rate drop was by toggling that overclock button off and then back on, maybe there’s some type of bug with their Alienware Command Center profiles and the way it’s auto-switching profiles or something.

With stress test running in a CPU and a GPU at the same time simultaneously, basically, CPU temperature was straight to 100 degrees celsius and it just stayed there, it did not drop down even with the excessive thermal throttling. I saw average core clock speeds of around 3.4 gigahertz. When doing this stress test, I saw a lot of red zones across the entire keyboard deck from the thermal imaging camera. While using the device, it was very uncomfortable as a user, the keyboard deck felt very warm to the touch.

BATTERY:

HP Omen 17 (Intel)

It has poor battery life. Surfing the web or watching youtube which will give you roughly three hours of gaming. Not only it will last short, usually 30 to 40 minutes which also will depend on the hunger of the game. It has a 70-watt battery unit that doesn’t provide the same power you get with the 230 watts power brick that this laptop comes with and you are going to also enjoy high frames when playing games with such power. For performance, you want the full power it can deliver, so play games while plugged in.

Dell G7 17 7700

The Dell G7 7700 gives good battery life. It has a 6-cell 97-watt hour battery inside it which gives around 12 hours of battery life on mixed usage like web surfing and playing videos. If you’re continuously gaming, then it will give less battery life than this assumption which depends on your settings and on the game title you’re playing.

Dell G7 7700

WHICH TO BUY?

The HP Omen 17 has an IPS display which is very beautiful, bright, punchy, and vibrant. It offers performance and good upgradeability options. All we need is a capable machine that does editing, plays games with ease, that has a good screen with nice true colors because that’s very important when editing videos or pictures, a laptop that has plenty of ports, a good keyboard full size. So, this one offers all of that features. I will say pretty much no to buy the G7 7700 comparing the HP Omen 17. This has powerful components generating tons of heat and the way Intel’s been making their chips over the past few years, there’s more heat being generated than ever in the history of laptops with these high-end components that these manufacturers are doing their best to give into these small chassis for us. Perhaps, a lower-spec variant of this laptop with a 1660 Ti would have handled the heat dissipation, a little bit better maybe a more aggressive thermal design on the bottom of the chassis.

In my opinion, the HP Omen 17 is way better in gaming and overall performance than the Dell G7 7700. Dell G7 7700 is also a good one if you want to buy a low-spec variant in GPU and CPU, it will be a good one.
