INTRODUCTION:

Dell G7 15 7500

Dell G7 15 7500 is a line up of budget gaming laptops. If you can’t afford the Alienware, then you can consider the G series from Dell. G7 is one of the best laptops in budget gaming but it has some quirks like thermal control, build materials.

HP Omen 15

HP Omen is a mid-range gaming laptop in the HP line up of laptops. This HP Omen 15’s performance in gaming is pretty good but I wish, the battery life could be better.  The design also looks different and stylish than the previous generation.

DESIGN:

Dell G7 15 7500

We have a really nice build quality. It has a metal finish. It’s nice and thin. It’s a metal build, so you don’t have to worry about the build quality. The design and look of the laptop are also stylish with RGB lighting. The keyboard and touchpad are also fine to use.

HP Omen 15

The top lid is made out of plastic. It’s using a rough texture to make the laptop more grippable. The bottom is made out of plastic but the deck of the keyboard is made out of metal. There is a ton of screen flex and even more so when you press down on the lid of the laptop, it’s super soft. The gap between the laptop when you close the lid allows air to go through and allows the intake grill to bring the air in and then push it out through the bottom. This is better for airflow, especially for those individuals that take this laptop home leave it closed or on vertical when they have it connected to a monitor.

DISPLAY:

Dell G7 15 7500

We have a 4K OLED screen, it’s really vivid which goes up to 400 nits. So, it’s nice and bright. One of the negative things about this laptop is that the screen’s only 60 hertz with the OLED option. We don’t really have any 4K high refresh laptops nor do we have the laptop GPUs that would be required to push such resolutions in AAA games. So, if you’re playing single-player games like Cyberpunk, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin’s Creed, all are totally fine because you’re pushing 60 hertz in those games, and being able to see it on that OLED makes it nicer than looking at 60 hertz on a TN or most IPS panels but if you do need the high refresh rate if you do want to play Counter-Strike Go, Call of Duty, it may not be the laptop for you.

HP Omen 15

In all the laptop models, there are so many customizations. Like the way in this if you cheaper model, you may not get the display as much as you expected. In this, if you buy the one with the 300-hertz display, you’re getting fantastic color accuracy and a good color gamut. Not only is this display that good for gaming, but it’s also good for content creation.

FEATURES:

Dell G7 15 7500

We have a 6 core 10750H, the 2070 Max-Q with eight gigabytes of VRAM. It has really nice keyboard and a big trackpad, even the speakers are pretty decent for this caliber of laptop. They’re not the loudest by default but if you go into the Alienware software, you can set a custom EQ and bump all the levels up and that’s going to increase the volume across the board.

There’s only a single M.2 slot and there’s no way to put in a SATA drive. So, this will only ever be able to hold one drive. Luckily, using some software, I’m able to bring those CPU temperatures down a little bit and keep the performance more in line. The 10750H is a 45-watt chip and really I don’t think the cooling solution in this G7 is adequate for a 45-watt chip. So, basically, I went in and I set the new power limits to 30 watts, so it’s only ever going to draw 30 watts instead of 45 and I set a clock limit to run at 3.5 gigahertz instead of boosting all the way up to 5 gigahertz and then throttling down. Being able to just maintain 3.5 gigahertz is gonna give us better performance in games than if we shoot way up to five gigahertz.

HP Omen 15

The HP Omen has an i7-10700H processor with NVIDIA RTX 2070 Max-Q graphics and 512GB SSD and also up to 32GB optane memory is available with it and up to 16GB Ram. The performance of this laptop is quite good with this combination of processor and graphics. As this has a high-end GPU, the performance of it in gaming is really nice.

There is a little bit of a thermal problem when you set the laptop in performance mode. If you think the laptop is too hot then you can use it in balanced mode. The speakers for the omen 15 are on the bottom side of the device.

In terms of ports, the HP Omen 15’s selection is quite good. On the right side, you have two USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt 3 port. On the left side, we have a full-size SD card slot, headphone and microphone combo jack, another USB 3.0 port, and an HDMI port.

PERFORMANCE:

Dell G7 15 7500

This is only an 80 watt GPU on RTX 2070, so the GPU thermals are actually really fine but the CPU, I think it’s because of a thin chassis and so the cooling solution has to be like a thin heat sink. When I was playing games, it was going up to like 96-98 degrees and then throttling the CPU down below three gigahertz and it’s really just borderline unacceptable performance for a gaming laptop. They added this little button called the “G Shift”, gaming shift button, and when you press that and it increases the fans but it also raises the clock on the CPU, so it cools down for five seconds but then it throttles even harder because it’s trying to run it faster than it was when it was throttling in the first place. In my opinion, you shouldn’t use that button.

For the GPU by default it boosts up to around 1300 to 1400 or so in most games but it’s only an 80-watt chip. So, you don’t really have overheating problems. So, typically in a laptop, I would undervolt it to lower the thermal output but in this case, it’s totally in check. So, instead of under-volting it, I just went ahead and put plus 150 on the core clock and plus 200 on the memory to give that a little boost, and with these overclock settings, it boosts up a lot closer to 1500-1600 megahertz and it does give us a little bit of a performance increase.

HP Omen 15

The laptop I compare is the Intel model. The AMD processors in laptops are superior but if you want RTX 2070 super or anything higher, you have to go with intel, all the good NVIDIA GPUs are in the intel models. This model with its i7 10750H is outperforming the competition, especially when it comes to multi-core related tasks. When it comes to GPU performance, this GPU is pulling 100 watts. In this, the gameplay is great. It’s getting good frame rates, I didn’t have any issues with drop frames. You’re going to be able to play all games comfortably on high settings at 1080p.

The downfalls of this laptop are that when you have it on performance mode, it does get really hot. CPU temperatures will jump up to 97 to 98 degrees, you get really high clock speeds and you’re getting 77 watts of the CPU but you are dealing with high temperatures. If you want to reduce the strain on the laptop, you just leave it in balanced mode and the CPU temperatures will never go over 80.

The fan noise does top up close to 60 decibels on performance mode. However, if you drop it down to balance mode under full load, you’re looking at around 52 to 53 decibels. On idle using balance mode, you’re looking at about 44 decibels. So, it’s not the quietest laptop. There is some fan spinning even doing simple productivity.

BATTERY:

Dell G7 15 7500

The only problem in most gaming laptops after thermal throttling is the battery life of it. But, it has a fair battery life with 5 to 6 hours of usage. It mostly depends on you that for what purpose you use this laptop and even in gaming, in which settings you play, all these things are included for the battery life.

HP Omen 15

The battery life on this is not great. I was only getting about two hours of use before needing to charge and this is just doing simple productivity. But, if you run the laptop in balance mode, you can get nearly three hours of battery life.

HP-Omen-15

WHICH TO BUY?

The G7 7500 is a pretty decent unit. It has some critical flaws, especially for competitive gaming use cases which is kind of sad because it’s marketed as a competitive gaming laptop. If you want something for single player type games, it really delivers a pretty solid experience if you mess with those settings. I think HP did a fantastic job compared to the previous model. I know, it’s not perfect and no gaming laptop is but I still think this is a good jump forward. Performance is fantastic, it gets hot in performance mode but at least you have the option if for whatever reason the thermals are too hot for your taste, you can drop it back down to balance mode and have a more cool quiet thermal experience.

In my opinion, both the laptops are good in gaming and overall performance. The price range of both the laptops is also quite similar. At last, it will be in your choice that which laptop seem more attractive for you considering all the features, performance, and price.
