INTRODUCTION:

DELL XPS 15 7590

This laptop is with the ninth gen CPUs and the GTX 1650. It’s a trendy laptop, and there’s a reason why so many people love it despite its price, and it’s thermal issues. It’s not great at everything, there are definitely limitations to what this laptop can do.

Dell XPS 15 9570

This is Dell’d one of the laptops which can compete with the MacBook from Apple. Once upon a time, this is considered the high performing laptop in Windows but after this, Dell started to produce more powerful laptops and the Dell XPS 7590 is one of them. dell_xps_15_7590

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION:

DELL XPS 15 7590

It’s a very well-built laptop and not just that but it feels great as well. There’s absolutely no flex on the keyboard deck or the screen assembly and the palm rest area is finished in this silicon-carbon fiber finish. It does an excellent job at hiding oil despite being black and it’s nice having something soft to rest your hands on while typing for long periods of time. The hinge is still tuned very tight like the previous generation but the reason is that it minimizes screen wobble for the optional touch screen.

The keyboard is actually really good, and I initially disliked it because of the small keycaps which made it a little bit harder to hit but when you get used to it, you will feel good. Key travel is good, the response from the switches is also good, great layout with media keys on the function row unlike the XPS 13 where they put the brightness controls like the arrow keys that don’t make any sense. It’s got three-stage white LED backlighting, I didn’t really find any issues while coding or gaming. There’s also a fingerprint sensor built into the power button.

This trackpad is among one of the best that I’ve tried for a Windows laptop. It’s got windows precision drivers, tracking is very accurate, excellent actuation force. It doesn’t power out fingers after clicking it too many times and the response from it is sharp and crisp. it’s a little bit loud but that’s the only complaint.

Dell XPS 15 9570

It still has the best-in-class exterior build. For a 15-inch Windows laptop, I still think the XPS 15 is the leader. It has an awesome exterior, carbon fiber stuff feels nice, it’s soft touch. It’s durable, holds up well over time. Th build quality, design, and all are quite same as the latest 15-inch XPS laptops.

DISPLAY:

DELL XPS 15 7590

They’re offering a bunch of different screen options, so the default and the one that I would recommend to most people is the 1080p IPS. There’s also a 4k IPS non-touchscreen, a 4K IPS with a touch screen, and a 4k OLED with touch support. The OLED is rated for 400 nits and the rest of them are rated for 500 nits at brightness, the same as the MacBook Pros. now I find it strange that Dell rates the OLED panel at 400 nits because it should be using the same panel as everyone else and the one that I measured on the Blade 15 came in at 530 nits average with a peak of 600.

The panel that I’m reviewing is the 4K IPS with touch, it’s literally the brightest laptop screen by a longshot. It’s got 630 of brightness that’s brighter than the peak brightness of the OLED panel. Color gamut is excellent, same with color accuracy, great viewing angles over 1500 to 1 contrast ratio same as the Macbook Pro. It is quite simply the best screen that you can get for content creation on a laptop.

Dell XPS 15 9570

This is the 4k panel and I really like it. It’s bright, it’s color accurate. It’s excellent for content creation or for anyone that enjoys a high-res high-quality screen. I think this is its best feature. The display quality is also pretty good even though this laptop is from the older series.

FEATURES:

DELL XPS 15 7590

The specs sheet shows that it has Intel’s 9th gen i7-9750H processor with up to 4.5GHz speed with turbo-boost technology and a 12MB cache. The graphics available in this laptop is the NVIDIA GeForce 1650 which performs decently in gaming and video editing. The storage and Ram memory are enough for this laptop and you have plenty of choices in terms of configurations.

The speakers on this haven’t really changed though, they still fire downward. They’re loud but down-firing speakers inherently lose detail in clarity because they’re bouncing the sound off of like the desk. There’s still no subwoofer. They are good if you need to use them for like watching YouTube videos or whatever but I’ve heard much better.

For ports, you have your power, USB-3, HDMI, Thunderbolt 3, and a headphone jack. On the right side, you have a second USB-3 and a full-size SD slot. Once you’re inside, you’ll find the CPU and the GPU. There are two sticks of RAM, a single m.2 slot, and your upgradeable killer ax1650 Wi-Fi card for Wi-Fi 6.

The heatsink now covers the VRMs but it still only has two thin and small heat pipes going to two small fans and because of this the thermals are still severely lacking compared to you almost every other laptop. Other laptops like Razer Blade, the MSI EX625, the Lenovo Y740, all are thin and light 15-inch gaming laptops packing the same 6 core CPU with RTX 2080s and the don’t throw, they will usually sit in the low to mid 90 degrees while turbo-boosting to 4 gigahertz but the XPS 15 maintains a 100 degrees while boosting only to 3.5 gigahertz under the same workload. Extended heavy loads are not ideal for this laptop.

Fan noise can be controlled using fan profiles but they don’t actually give you manual fan control to crank them before running a heavy program. Under a heavy load, the fans aren’t actually all that loud, they’re about the same as a MacBook Pro.

Dell XPS 15 9570

The processor is from Intel’s 8th generation and there are so many options in choosing graphics, Intel UHD graphics, NVIDIA GeForce 1050, NVIDIA GeForce 1050 Ti graphics, so you can choose whatever you want and in terms of that, the price of the laptop also increase.

There’s a decent port selection and the Thunderbolt 3 port finally supports four lanes of PCIe. So, if you want to connect to an external GPU, you’re getting full bandwidth. It has an excellent trackpad, good keyboard with white backlighting. It only has room for a single SSD slot. There is room for a secondary drive, it’s like an optional kit, but it’s a SATA drive and you also have to use a smaller battery if you use that.

The speakers are okay, they’re also not in the best position, they are underneath the laptop. The webcam is still under the panel. It’s centered this year, but it still has that unflattering angle.

PERFORMANCE:

DELL XPS 15 7590

Now, you can game on it, you can edit 4K videos, you can compile code but gaming laptops like the Razer Blade 15 are really nice even for just normal use for like a student for example. There is a clean design, great trackpad, they’re not gimped everywhere else for the sake of performance like they were just a few years ago. So, if you need a well-built thin, and light high-performance laptop that’s also good at being an everyday laptop just know that, this isn’t the only option. Gaming laptops are getting really good now.

For content creators, the screen is huge, and the performance is outstanding, the actual editing process doesn’t max the CPU non-stop. It’s not going to throttle and the screen outweighs the performance penalty in real-world use compared to something like a Razer Blade 15. For coding, it’s also quite good and unique. The base model comes with a quad-core i5 with integrated graphics and depending on what you’re coding, you might not need dedicated graphics.

Dell XPS 15 9570

These devices have been upgraded from the previous generation by a significant amount. Both the CPU and the GPU are strong performers. There are a few configurations for the CPU: the i5 and i7 are fast, the i9 is faster.

The GPU in this one is a 1050 Ti and it pushes out really respectable frame rates for most modern titles right now at 1080p and it’s also great for Adobe content. The new XPS 15 is quite a bit faster in Premiere than last year’s model.

If you push these devices hard for extended periods of time, you will run into thermal throttling. The i5 and the i7 throttle occasionally, the i9 throttles a little bit more. The thermal limitations of this chassis are quite pronounced, and just when you stick in a very powerful chip like the i9 into this, you’re losing a lot of the value of that chip because of the thermal design of this laptop. So this brings up the question of whether or not this thermal stuff is a serious issue. You have to understand that the XPS 15 was not built as a gaming device. It is a work-oriented device. It’s a thin and light laptop.

BATTERY:

DELL XPS 15 7590

There’s a massive 97-watt hour battery inside that’ll get you about eight hours of battery life and more battery life if you go with the 1080p screen and this is one of the biggest advantages. This battery is a full workday means you don’t have to bring your charger with you.

Dell XPS 15 9570

It has awesome battery life. With the screen at 215 nits, you may get full eight hours of battery life, that’s a better battery than the previous generation.

WHICH TO BUY?

In the XPS 7590, you get a nice keyboard, all-day battery life. It’s faster than an ultrabook at compiling with the 45 watt CPU. The only thing that I absolutely could not do would be machine learning with large data sets that exceeded the 4GB of VRAM on the GTX 1650, so it just didn’t work at all. For people that just want a 15-inch laptop without all the horsepower with the great build quality, great screen, keyboard, trackpad, all-day battery life without selling their soul, the base XPS 15 will be good. The high-end model of this XPS 7590 has faster performance in all the works.

The Dell XPS 9750 is also a good one to buy. As it’s an old series laptop, the price range of this will be low. If you have less budget then the Dell XPS 9750 is now also a good one to buy or you should buy the XPS 7950 which has all new upgraded features with the price slightly higher comparatively.

If you’re shopping for a thin-and-light workhorse (with compromises) you’ll like this price. Our unit with Core i9, 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD and 4K OLED was selling for $2,649 at the time of our review. A similarly configured Macbook Pro 15 with the same CPU, as well as the same amount of storage and RAM, hits the wallet harder at $3,600. So yes, believe or not, the XPS 15 7590 is a deal. But know what your buying and what you’re buying it for.

Summed up, the new Dell XPS 15 is a premium laptop in every sense, from its physical design and eye-popping OLED display, to its fasten-your-seat-belt performance. It’s still one of the very best 15-inch laptops on the market and an easy HotHardware Editor’s Choice.

Even at the entry level price, the XPS 15 7590 is an expensive laptop. Boost the configuration with an OLED screen, plus plenty of RAM and SSD storage, and you’re looking at a serious price tag. For that money, we think Dell should provide more…

By Ultrabookreview
With much-improved GPU performance and a sensible webcam location, the XPS 15 7590 makes a case for itself against competitors like the ThinkPad X1 Extreme or P1 with its good looks and lower price. However, due to quality-control issues and technology limitations, the OLED display is somewhat less compelling than the FHD and UHD IPS options, in my opinion.

During my 10-day stint with Dell’s XPS 15 9570, I loved using the laptop so much that it’s tough sending it back. Yet, the laptop isn’t for meant for everyone. If you’re looking for a machine for casual purposes, then the XPS 15 is surely overkill. On…
