INTRODUCTION:

HP Pavilion 15

Pavilion 15 is a middle ranged laptop for the students and working people. It has Ice-Lake processor with integrated and discrete graphics of NVIDIA MX230.

Asus Vivobook 15 X512

This is Vivobook 15.6 inch full HD laptop. So, this is the latest version with Intel Core i5 10th gen possessor and it also has a graphics card of MX230. Vivobook is the mid-level range where they are trying to go for a more balanced approach of price, productivity, and performance.

DESIGN & BUILD:

HP Pavilion 15

The HP Pavilion 15 is a compact 15 inches High Definition laptop designed for general purpose use. It has a US layout designed silver color keyboard with number pad. It does not have a backlight. It could be more effective if it had been the backlight on this keyboard. There is enough distance between each key so that smoothly you can type and hopefully it will give you a good work experience. It has a wide multi-touch trackpad which is a little big compared to the smile-shaped key model, you can scroll and zoom in and out.

Asus Vivobook 15 X512

This has a matte finish on top. It is pretty sleek in design and little on the heavier side. It has this ergo left wherein you open the lid and the bottom chassis just lifts up for better airflow.

Asus Vivobook does not have anything fancy in terms of design except that ergo hinge. The ergo lift hinge is a really nice feature. As you lift the lid, the hinge drops the bottom of the screen down behind the keyboard base and when the laptop is fully opened, the base of the lid rests on the desk and raises the keyboard up at a slight angle. The lift is about 5mm, not a massive amount but enough to appeal to those who dislike a typing surface that’s flat on the desk. The top and bottom panel of the laptop has a smooth matte finish which thankfully is not a fingerprint magnet.

The overall construction is solid and the plastic chassis is reasonably robust. Although I was able to flex the lid and you’ll probably want to use a sleeve to protect the laptop in transit. It’s quite heavy at 1.75 kgs and the footprint is reasonably large. So, it’s not going to fit in a smaller backpacks or bags.

DISPLAY QUALITY:

HP Pavilion 15

With its IPS technology, the screen produces colors more faithfully than the average and ensures comfortable viewing angles both horizontally or vertically. It lends itself well to the display of high definition content in particular to videos due to precise Full HD definition and it is sixteen to nine format ratio anti-reflective screen. Also, it offers better visibility than a shiny panel in a bright environment.

Asus Vivobook 15 X512

The major disappointement of this laptop is the screen. It has a frameless four sided nano edge display with an ultra slim 5.7 mm bezel giving an amazing 88% screen to body ratio. The full HD resolution is not the problem and nor is the matte finish, the problem is that the anti glare IPS screen colors are washed out. I found reading websites and watching videos underwhelming and pushing the screen to full brightness did not help. Skin tones sometimes seem greenish and even the brightest colors seem dull. The screen also suffers from poor viewing angles. The display gets completely washed out when looking from top, bottom, or the sides.

FEATURES:

HP Pavilion 15

It is a new thin and versatile ultrabook with 15 inches Full HD IPS anti-reflective screen. It is a quad-core i7 Ice Lake processor with Iris Plus graphics, fast 512 gigabytes SSD, an NVIDIA graphics card with Optimus technology. It is only 1.85 kilograms and its dimension 36.16 by 24.56 by 1.79 centimeters. The processor name of this laptop is Intel Core i7 1065G7 processor. This processor-based frequency 1.30 gigahertz, max turbo frequency is 3.9 gigahertz, four-core, eight threads, lithography ten nanometers, and TDP 15 watt. It has Intel Iris Plus graphics which is processor graphics. This graphics-based frequency 300 megahertz max dynamic frequency 1.1 gigahertz and it supports 4K up to 120 Hertz. It also has a dedicated graphics card which is GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce MX250 with optimist technology and it is four gigabytes.

It has an HP wide vision HD webcam with an integrated dual array digital microphone which is seated in the middle of the display’s upper bezel. This camera in my opinion is not good but you can use this for video conferences or chatting.

By the trackpad on the right side, it has a power port, two USB 3.1 Type-A first-generation, a laptop Locker, and the multi SD card reader. On the left side, it has an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, and a 3.5 millimeters combo audio port.

Asus Vivobook 15 X512

This Asus Vivobook X512 is equipped with Intel processor with NVIDIA MX230 graphics. It has plenty of RAM and storage of up to 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD with Intel Optane memory in storage.

The touchpad and the fingerprint sensor are good, especially the fingerprint sensor. It will let you log in within three seconds which is plea fast. I didn’t face any issues with the fingerprint sensor. The touchpad is made of plastic and has windows precision drivers. It handled Windows 10 gestures quite nicely.

The Vivobook is equipped with a full-size chiclet keyboard which includes a numpad on the right side. The keyboard has a lot of flex to it which made it a heavy-handed typist while the keyboard action is very soft and squidgy with no noticeable flick. It’s not problematic to use but in comparison to other high-end keyboards, it is very disappointing. The keyboard is not backlit.

There are good number of I/O ports on the laptop. On the left, we have two USB 2.0 ports and notification lights. On the right, we have the charge port USB 3.1 Type-A port, HDMI port, USB-C port, headphone jack, and a micro SD card reader.

The speakers are very soft and tinny. I was expecting good speakers from a big laptop like this but I was completely disappointed. Another negative thing in this laptop is you cannot open this laptop with one hand.

PERFORMANCE:

HP Pavilion 15

It relies on a good amount of RAM of 16 gigabytes inside of this laptop. It has two Ram slots but both can fill up by 8 GB RAM so that you can’t extend the RAM. It has 512 gigabytes PCIe NVMe SSD storage. This ultrabook is much more responsive and fluid than if it were equated with a hard drive. Compared to the SSD is much faster will be more energy-efficient and more impact resistant for the above system configuration. Easily, you can use this laptop with high-end fast work like graphic design, 3D animation, Autocad, video rendering, or high-end gaming.

The processor named Intel Core i7 and the codename of it is Ice Lake, max TDP is 15 watt, technology ten nanometers. HP 86C2 motherboard used in this laptop. This motherboard chipset into Ice Lake and Southbridge ice Lake PCH by the CPU Z bench. CPU score for the single thread 403 and multi-thread score 2174. When I run Cinebench R15, I got an OpenGL score of 87 FPS and a CPU score of 569 CB. Geekbench 5 CPU benchmark for the single-core score 1146 and multi-core score 4020. Compute benchmark with Intel Iris + graphics open CL score 8937. Compute benchmark with MX250 graphics open CL score 10994. 3D mark 10 scores 1200. When I try to copy a 3.5 gigabytes file from my portable hard drive, it takes only 51 seconds. When I try to copy this file from desktop to documents, it takes less than three seconds. Also, I have checked the copy from the desktop to my portable drive and it took only 33 seconds.

Asus Vivobook 15 X512

In terms of performance, it runs on 10th gen Intel Core i5 1.6 gigahertz processor coupled with 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and 512 GB of PCIe NVMe M.2 internal storage. The laptop also comes with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce MX230 graphics processor. The RAM is upgradeable to 16GB at maximum. Juggling day-to-day tasks is a breeze for this laptop. Chrome, light photo editing, casual gaming, the performance is a really good. When it comes to gaming, I only tried Fortnight and you can easily play the game on medium settings. If you’re a gamer and thinking of buying this laptop, then don’t do that anyway. It runs on old MX230 processor with 2GB GDDR5 video RAM. At best, you can do gaming on low to medium settings but as soon as you crank up the graphics, the game will jitter and the performance won’t be smooth.

BATTERY:

HP Pavilion 15

It has a three cell 41 WHr li-ion battery used in this laptop. For normal use, it will give you three to four hours of backup.

Asus Vivobook 15 X512

The battery life is good too. It comes with an updated 65 watt lithium cell battery. On normal days, I get around 5 to 6 hours of screen on time which is decent for the laptop of its size.

WHICH TO BUY?

There are many things which I like about this Vivobook x512. Its ergo lift feature, narrow bezel, good performance, and solid battery life but Asus has definitely cut corners when it comes to the screen and the keyboard, the main components of any laptop. The screen is not vibrant enough and the keyboard has a sponge-like feel to it. If you are after a laptop or a bit of relaxing and media viewing and two presentations, you might want to look elsewhere. If you can ignore the shortcomings, this laptop has a good price to performance ratio. Considering each and every feature, I think Pavilion 15 will be better to buy for a normal office works and some light gaming.
