INTRODUCTION:

HP Pavilion x360 14

This is HP Pavilion x360 two-in-one convertible laptop, this is a touchscreen laptop. This one G series processor coupled with Intel UHD graphics.

Lenovo Yoga C740 14

Lenovo Yoga C740 is a 14-inch model which is the next level down of C940, so it’s around $250 less money right. It’s starting at $699 with the Core i5, eight GB of Ram, 256 GB SSD, and you’re not giving all that much. You still get a premium aluminum chassis, nice and rigid looking. It is very similar to the C940 in fact, with only a full HD display option and no 4K.

DESIGN:

HP Pavilion x360 14

Its build quality is quite superb. The entire construction of this laptop feels very solid. The hinges are strong and the entire aluminum chassis on the outside makes it looks really premium. It is designed in quite a premium fashion, perfect for professionals, and students who really wanted to read in the laptop which looks good. The first half of the problem x360 is slathered in silver paint and stamped at the center is a reflective HP logo. The edges of the foot and the tech curved outward and then inward as they meet each other creating an hourglass design that surrounds this laptop. There is also probably a logo on the hinge of the laptop.

Opening the Pavilion x360 reveals a black tone on the deck, a carved-out section for the keyboard at the center, and a vent grille for the Bang & Olufsen speakers just above it. There’s also a fingerprint reader to the right of the touchpad, the ultra-thin bezel, and edge-to-edge keyboard are designed beautifully to maximize the plain keyboard area.

The keyboard is backlit and the typing experience is satisfying. The keys are smooth and require a decent amount of force and travel before they hit the bottom. The touchpad is made of plastic and has windows precision drivers. It handled Windows 10 gestures quite nicely. Overall, I have no complaints about the keyboard and touchpad and you will get used to it pretty quickly.

Lenovo Yoga C740 14

It is pretty thin & light, it’s 3.09 pounds which is 1.4 kilograms. In terms of the weight difference between the Yoga C940, it’s only a very few ounces and really isn’t a difference there. It has a white backlit keyboard and it’s your typical fairly low travel but common by today’s standards portable ultrabook keyboard. The white backlighting on mica and iron-gray and mica, the keys do tend to make the masking disappear a little bit unless the room is really fairly dark. You have a Microsoft precision trackpad. It works just fine.

DISPLAY QUALITY:

HP Pavilion x360 14

The display is flanked by a 14 inches full HD backlit multi-touch panel. The panel is quite glossy and makes it a little frustrating to look at. It also doesn’t get super bright, the nits count is 261. However, the touchscreen is super responsive and I have no issues when I use this laptop in tablet mode. The panel covered 60% of the sRGB color gamut which is duller than the other main step laptop and similar category.

Lenovo Yoga C740 14

For displays, your only choice is a full HD IPS discrete screen and it supports touch and pen though, unlike the yoga C940, the pen is not included with the C740. It works fine, it’s pretty decent if you’re a hobbyist artist or if you’re a note-taker, it certainly does the job. The display on this is quite nice for the price. Actually, I was pretty surprised with the quality of this right after the C940s Full HD display. The only thing I don’t like is it’s very glossy and it almost looks like there’s an air gap of the glass over the display. Brightness on this is pretty decent at 310 nits. Contrast is better than average. Color gamut is full sRGB coverage. Overall, they’ve done a good job.

FEATURES:

HP Pavilion x360 14

This laptop has a 14 inches display for your daily needs. It is powered by an Intel Core i5 10210U 10th gen processor coupled with 8 GB of RAM and has 256 GB SSD storage. It runs on Windows 10 home basic operating system as far as the official card is concerned, this notebook has an Intel HD graphics card to manage the graphical functions. To keep it alive, it has a 3-cell lithium-ion battery and weighs 1.58 kgs.

Let’s move to the i/o situation. On the Left, we have one USB 3.1 Type-A port, a headphone jack, air vents, a power on/off button which also acts as sleep-wake button, and a Kensington lock. On the right, we have a plethora of ports. We have the charge port, next is HDMI port, another USB 3.1 Type-A port, USB-C port which is sadly not in Thunderbolt 3 and does not even support charging, and lastly, we have an SD card reader and a notification light.

The Pavilion stop firing Bang & Olufsen speakers are good for a laptop. They’re not super loud but they are okay to fill a room. This is a convertible meaning, you can work in a laptop mode, watch in a reverse mode, play in a tent mode, and draw on a target position, everything is possible with this laptop. The active pen which comes in the box is good too. It works well with the laptop and has low latency. The laptop barely passes the one-hand test. The hinges are pretty solid and HP claims it will last for about twenty-five thousand openings and close. It has Alexa built-in.

Lenovo Yoga C740 14

By the way, there also a 15.6-inch version of the C740 unlike the old days with the 700 series Yoga. It’s really the same specs internally, just a bigger screen, you’re not gonna get fancy dedicated graphics or anything like that. So, you got two choices to choose from. Inside, we have Intel tenth generation Ice-Lake quad-core CPUs, this is the kind of lower-end version of that CPU. In terms of graphics, not the Intel Iris Plus that you would see on the yoga C940 and on the HP Spectre x360, this has still Intel UHD graphics, so much like the previous generation. You have a choice of a Core i5 or Core i7. You can get it with 8 or 16 GB of DDR4 2666 megahertz Ram and that is soldered onboard which is typical of today’s thin & light ultrabooks.

For storage even though this is not the top-of-the-line model, you get a pretty fast M.2 NVMe SSD. We have the 512GB SSD in ours and it’s a fast Samsung model which gives excellent benchmark numbers on that SSD. You can get 256 or 512 or even a one terabyte SSD. You could upgrade it yourself afterward if you’re the kind of person who tinkers and compared to the C940 you can get that with up to 2 terabytes if you don’t want to upgrade in the future.

We’ve got a fingerprint scanner, no Windows Hello camera, the 720p webcam does have a little privacy shutter. This has stereo speakers surrounding the keyboard with Dolby Atmos software and that’s a good place to put the speakers firing up at least when you’re using in traditional laptop mode, not so much in tablet mode. The port area is pretty big on each side but the sound is loud but it sounds a little distorted and a little brash to me. For the price, it’s not bad and it does have a headphone jack. It also has two USB-C 3.1 gen1 ports, it’s not Thunderbolt 3 but one of those will be used with the charger and we have one USB-A port as well.

This one versus the C940, there are some things to keep in mind. There is no Thunderbolt 3 just USB-C, you only have a full HD display option whereas with the C940, you can get the full HD display which is pretty similar to this full HD display or you can get a 4K display. The battery is a bit bigger on the Yoga C940, it’s 60-watt hour versus this one being a 51-watt hour. If you get the 4K display on C940, that will really impact battery life and bring battery life down. The pen is not included with this one, you do get that fairly smaller pen with the C940. The C940 has Wi-Fi 6, this one is Wi-Fi 5. The Yoga C940 has that rotating soundbar whereas this one pretty much only coming out from the keyboard deck area. The C940 has faster RAM, it’s not enough of a difference that you’d ever be able to tell.

To get inside, you unscrew the torques T5 screw. There’s a 51-watt hour battery. There’s our fan with a lot of fan blades, it’s a pretty high-quality fan that doesn’t make very loud annoying sounds. The M.2 SSD is under some heat tape, so that’s replaceable. There is our Wi-Fi card also socketed, upgradeable ram is soldered on board.

PERFORMANCE:

HP Pavilion x360 14

In terms of performance, it is armed with an Intel Core i5 10 gen processor plus 8 GB of RAM with 256 GB of SSD. This laptop juggles Chrome with 20 tabs open + Microsoft Office. There’s light photo editing without breaking a sweat. Quad-core eight-way processing provides maximum power to go, Intel turbo boost technology delivers dynamic extra power when you need it.

Lenovo Yoga C740 14

Performance on this is good, it’s typical for an Intel 10th gen ultrabook a little bit lower than some of those that come in Intel Iris Plus graphics because the graphics numbers won’t be that high, they’ll be pretty similar to Intel 8th gen. Thermals on this even though it’s pretty thin and it’s metal, it does a good job exhausting heat, it doesn’t get burning hot to the touch even if you’re working it kind of hard. I have the CPU temperatures when pushing it really hard doing benchmarks and stuff. The CPU temperatures will get into the 90s centigrade which is kind of typical in these days for CPUs and they normally do not get that hot. You won’t hear the fan that much actually and it’s not very loud, it’s not annoying by any means compared to several generations ago Lenovo Yoga laptops.

BATTERY:

HP Pavilion x360 14

In terms of battery life, HP claims 10 hours of battery life which is nowhere near the real-world tests. I am getting only 4 to 5 hours with medium screen brightness. However, the barrel charger can charge it up to 50% within 45 minutes.

Lenovo Yoga C740 14

This has a 51-watt hour battery. This is a pretty good capacity for a laptop of this size and it comes with a 65-watt fast charger and the same one Lenovo uses a lot of their laptops including Thinkpads. Battery life on this is quite good, it’s been running about seven to eight hours on the charge. A full HD display of the core i5 really helps and not pushing the envelope for power demand. Compared to some of the older generations of the 7 Series of yoga, this is definitely an improvement.

Lenovo Yoga C740 14

WHICH TO BUY?

The HP Pavilion x360 14-inch laptop is perfect for those who are looking for a machine for content consumption and also for tackling day-to-day tasks. Also, the display is not a huge deal-breaker, the only downer is the battery life, and it’s a little on the heavy side but its weight around 1.58 kgs. If you can look past those then this is the perfect 2-in-1 laptop for under $700. The Lenovo C740 14-inch laptop is also a good one to buy for under $700. In my opinion, for a budget laptop with better performance, I think the HP Pavilion x360 14 laptop will be better than the Lenovo Yoga C740 because of its processor performance.
