DESIGN & BUILD:

HP Elitebook 830 G7

This is a really sleek chassis with a minimal bezel on the top and bottom and it just feels really modern. It feels as if HP’s consumer design language has made its way onto the business line. This is really like the nano design, it doesn’t fully go back which is quite a strange thing. It generally seems to be a quite good design. People probably don’t expect an ethernet port in this compact chassis. It just feels so much more than the chassis if that makes sense.

The power button is now actually part of the keyboard which is some interesting design. In some competitor laptops, you have a dedicated button with a fingerprint sensor built-in. I think that’s a more convenient one. Personally, having the power button so close to the delete button and print screens button inevitably, you’re going to accidentally press it. The top row of the keyboard feels a lot softer. The power button actually has quite a bit more firm feel to it, same for the space button. It is understanding that there’s a limitation in how much travel they can put in the laptop. So, they’ve got for certain keys just create that view of action even if it’s a little bit more than others, the directional key is quite compressed. On the center, you’ll notice there is no checkpoint anymore and there’s no dedicated click button on the trackpad. The keyboard feels a good step forward from the G5 and G6 in the sense that some of the keys are clearly more pronounced.

If you want a portable laptop to drag around all day long, the Elitebook 1.3 kilogram chassis is crazy light as well as compact enough to cram into even very modest backpacks and carry bags. The aluminum frame may be super light but it’s also reassuringly rugged. In fact, HP has put the Elitebook through all kinds of military-grade durability tests including drop, dust, vibration, humidity, altitude, low temperature, and high temperature.

The chiclet keyboard is an absolute delight considering the laptop’s skinny build offering respectable travel and a firm comfortable typing experience. You’ve got three levels of backlight here and a glorious spill-resistant design as well which is an absolute lifesaver when you’re desperately trying to crack through that last bit of work. While there’s no touchscreen control here, the suspicious trackpad is pleasingly responsive to your swipes and gestures and with clickable corners that don’t send the cursor skittering across the screen. HP has even added one of that funky pointer button to the middle of the keyboard for those moments when you need absolute precision complete with their own dedicated mouse buttons.

We’ve got the privacy screen, so this is 1000 nits privacy screen. There are also 250 nits and 400 nits display options. The privacy panel is likely to still have some trade-offs in terms of the color accuracy and the viewing angle versus a standard screen, that’s why I suggest the 400 nits. If we switch on privacy mode, you can’t see anything from the side. It’s quite an interesting feature, they’ve definitely improved it across the generations. It used to be quite a big trade-off when you go privacy even if you switch it off. There is nice display vibrance and nice viewing and less contrast.

Creative users can definitely enjoy that 14-inch IPS display as well. The Full HD resolution keeps images crisp when you’re editing the pictures or dosing off work with a bit of anime action. Color reproduction is accurate too, almost entirely covering off the sRGB gamut. Additionally, the incredibly effective anti-glare coating on the display combined with the mighty maximum brightness of around 400 nits means you’ll have absolutely no problems with visibility when you’re using this thing outdoors and that just further boosts the portability of the Elitebook 840.

On this laptop, we’ve got the i7. You can buy with the six-core option but to be honest, the six-core is so scarce at the moment, I suspect most people would probably see this or the i5 model if they get the Intel side of it for a 13.3-inch laptop. This is more upgradable than many of the Dell and Lenovo competitors. You can upgrade the RAM. Under the base cover, remove the screws and there’s going to be an aluminum shield to remove and the RAM is just serviceable. In addition to the RAM, the M.2 SSD and the Wi-Fi chip are also upgradable.

This model has a smart card, it’s quite nice, there’s also an audio jack, two USB 3 ports. On the other side, it’s two Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports, HDMI, and also the power jack, no ethernet, and as you can see no ports at the back.

On the inside of the laptop, you have upwards-facing speakers. So, it’s always quite good to have the speakers facing directly to you. Speakers have briefly tested. It seems to be decent, especially because it’s upwards facing. The speaker’s sound is loud enough to enjoy the media consumption.

This laptop also boasts a triple mic setup, so it can clearly pick up your voice even with a fair bit of background rumble for the inevitable barrage of online chats.

PERFORMANCE:

The old generation Elitebook 830 laptops use side vents for cooling but this 830 G7 put vents above the keyboard means between the keyboard and display, so it doesn’t harm you if you’re a left-hand user. This way of design doesn’t affect the temperatures anyway. The temperature does go so high as this laptop is so thin and compact but all the temperatures are at a manageable point. 

This Elitebook performs well in day-to-day works. Even in 3D rendering, it performs well and scored about 2080 with the Intel i7 processor. For the GPU test, in 3D Mark Fire Strike, it got around 1240 scores which is much better than the previous generations.

Another highlight of this professional laptop is the performance with grunt provided by one of Intel’s 10th generation core i7 platforms which is built for security as well as a good bit of grunt work and it’s backed here in the Elitebook by 16 GB of RAM.

Portability is even further enhanced by the very respectable battery life. The Elitebook 840 can keep you going for a full day on a charge without any worry. This thing has got proper steering power.

WHICH TO BUY?

In my opinion, both these Elitebooks are great to buy but I will choose the Elitebook 840 G7 as it is a little bigger and also it is portable too and it offers more features and better performance than the Elitebook 830 G7.
