AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs 5700X vs 3700X vs 2700X: Which to Buy?

Estimated read time 4 min read

I have compared the latest Ryzen 7 7700X with 5700X, 3700X, and 2700X. Today, I will tell you that you should really upgrade to 7700X? So, I have compared all four processors in applications and game benchmarks.

Cores and Threads are same on all four processors, but the newer 7700X has higher clock speeds, and it also uses AM5 socket which supports DDR5 memory. Ryzen 7000 chips also have integrated graphics too.

Performance

Now I will show you the Application and Gaming Benchmarks I have tested, but before that, take a look at My System Specifications:

  • Motherboard (AM5) – Gigabyte Aorus X670E Master
  • Motherboard (AM4) – MSI X570S Carbon WiFi
  • RAM (AM5) – 32GB DDR5 6000Mhz
  • RAM (AM4) – 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz
  • GPU – GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Gaming OC

Application Benchmarks

To get the general idea of single and multi core performance, Cinebench R23 is best. Ryzen 7 7700X and 5700X have same cores and threads, but still the 7700X is scoring 35% higher in single core and 26% higher in multi-core than 5700X.

The Corona benchmark uses the processor to render out a scene, but lower times are better in this one as we’re looking at how long the task took rather than a score.

7-Zip was used to test compression and decompression. The 7700X was 28% faster than the 5700X in compression and 21% in decompression. Compression is almost twice as fast on the 7700X when compared to the 2700X though.

Adobe Premiere was tested with the Puget Systems benchmark tool. There is only minor differences between the 3700X and 5700X. But 7700X has a larger lead because it also using intergrated graphics card.

Adobe Photoshop does better with more single threaded performance, the 7700X is scoring 29% ahead of the 5700X, and 58% ahead of the 2700X.

Game Benchmarks

Watch Dogs Legion was tested with the game’s benchmark, and the 7700X is 23% faster than 5700X at 1080p, but at 1440p, it was just 12% faster.

You will see GPU limits at 1440p in Cyberpunk 2077. The 3700X, 5700X, and 7700X were all reaching basically the same average frame rate, and the 2700X was only 10 FPS behind. At 1080p, the 2700X was still able to get us 100 FPS when paired with the 3090 Ti.

I tested Fortnite with medium settings. The 7700X was just 12% ahead of the 5700X at the lower 1080p resolution. The 7700X was 48% faster than the older 3700X, and then a whopping 68% faster compared to the 2700X.

Apex Legends have some weird results, the 5700X was technically ahead again at 1080p, while the 3700X was basically tied with the 7700X at 1440p in terms of average FPS. The 2700X isn’t too far behind here either. So, basically for this game CPU dosent matter.

Again the things are weird with Call of Duty: Warzone. At 1080p we’re seeing basically the same average FPS on the 3700X, 5700X and 7700X and the 5700X appears to be ahead at 1440p.

Halo Infinite has some bigger gaps at 1440p, though the differences between the 5700X and 7700X at 1440p were just an 7% lead with the 7700X. At 1080p, the 7700X was 61% ahead of the 2700X, 44% ahead of the 3700X, and 22% ahead of the 5700X.

Microsoft Flight Simulator was tested in the Sydney landing challenge, and there weren’t really any noteworthy differences between 1080p and 1440p in this game.

Spiderman Remastered also didn’t have that much of a performance difference between 1080p and 1440p resolutions.

Final Thoughts

If you already own a 2700X, you can simply swap it out for a 3700X or 5700X without changing the hardware. In all honesty, upgrading to the 5700X gives you the majority of the benefits for a lot less money if you already have an AM4 system. The 5700X is not only over $200 less expensive than the 7700X, but the 7700X would also require you to purchase a new motherboard and DDR5 memory.

There’s no denying that the 7700X offers some nice performance improvements, even though the 3700X still offers the best value in terms of gaming and productivity. In the end, it comes down to whether or not you want to fork over the extra cash to get the performance upgrades.
