INTRODUCTION:

AMD is set to take out Intel in the business market because this laptop the HP Elitebook 845 G7 is terrible. It contains an AMD Pro CPU which is a business CPU set to take on Intel’s vPro. People might associate with the Thinkpad T-series is really robust, it just works and occasionally if there is a function over the form, the T14 is not any different. Most of the changes are inside with the new Ryzen option, ax wi-fi, additionally three new keyboard shortcuts, otherwise, it’s a very similar machine. Let’s get into the detailed comparison.

HP EliteBook 845 G7

DESIGN:

HP Elitebook 845 G7

It’s just clean, it’s simple, it just looks like a business laptop without feeling too boring. It’s an all-aluminum chassis with plastic inside to reinforce it to give it a solid feel. There’s a bit of squish on the top but it’s nowhere nearly as bad as the HP Omen 15. Thanks to HP for putting proper Phillips screws on the bottom and not using some sort of screw instead it just makes people getting into the laptop a lot easier. The hinge is super solid, I’m not feeling any wobble or bad flex using this laptop, it just works as it should. It’s a 14-inch laptop, so it’s a bit heavier than most other laptops at 3.31 pounds but I don’t feel like this is a heavy laptop in general.

This keyboard is fantastic, it feels so comfortable to type on. The travel distance and the actuation force are a pleasure. You have two levels of backlighting and HP has their own version of the middle TrackPoint. If I have to compare it to the Lenovo TrackPoint, this one’s a bit softer with an indent in the middle for your finger to rest and a little bit more ribbed for your pleasure whereas the Lenovo Trackpoint is harder and firmer. The touchpad is a good size, it is made out of glass and the accuracy is pretty good, not as good as the Surface laptop but really no major complaints at all.

Lenovo Thinkpad T14

The texture of the finish is not actually the same between the AMD and Intel model. So, all the AMD model is more finely grained and on the Intel model, it’s just a little bit less finely grained. So, the Intel model is a little bit more grippy. If we compare the T14 on top of the T440P, you can actually see the thickness difference is really noticeable align the edge to the rear right.

The keyboard gives a good response and of course, I’m really happy to see an upwards firing speaker same as the T495. The click button gives prompt feedback and one hopes that the next generation will give a little bit deeper press. The trackpad has a good amount of friction, some people might like this. The texture on the inside is a soft and rubbery finish gives a reassuring sense that the machine is very durable. The enter key doesn’t sound low, it doesn’t feel normal that’s catching onto the edge of the keyboard frame. So, that is just one misaligned key. The majority of the Thinkpad key is just such a joy to type on, especially longer documents.

DISPLAY:

HP Elitebook 845 G7

This display is 14 inches, it’s 60 hertz, IPS, and matte, so you don’t get those crazy reflections. It’s not a touch-screen but it does have a good color gamut, good color accuracy, and great screen brightness. I’d be totally comfortable doing design work on this.

Lenovo Thinkpad T14

The screen option you get is really similar to what you get with the Intel. One exception is the Dolby Vision HDR screen that 10-bit stunning panel is for Intel only. We’ve got the 400 nits low powered display, very good in versatility whether you’re drifting in office or meeting room, that’s a little bit brighter. There’s a 300 nits option which is the touchscreen. The privacy panel probably suggests that only get it if you actually need the privacy aspect because the viewing angle is sometimes slightly less optimal than normal screens. The lack of an Adobe Vision screen is intriguing. This is a perfect mission to edit video on and of course, that panel will be glossy, so it’s not for everybody.

This screen is generally. There’s some backlight bleed on the edge of the display, this is usually quite typical of the LCD displays, it looks much better. The viewing angle is typically very good and looking up, the viewing angle is still good and fairly discoloration. In the future, it would be nice if we could have a higher than 60hz refresh rate on Thinkpad displays.

FEATURES:

HP Elitebook 845 G7

Inside the laptop, all the stuff you’d expect to be upgradable are upgradeable. You have two RAM slots for a potential of up to 32 gigabytes. You have your NVMe SSD that gets good read and write, speeds swappable Wi-Fi card, and a 53-watt hour battery. The only thing I don’t like about the internals is the fact that they went with one fan and one heat pipe, that’s why you’re getting that low fan noise and a more conservative approach to performance.

On the left-hand side, you have your noble lock, two USB ports, an audio jack, and your smart card reader. On the right-hand side, you have your barrel connector for your power, HDMI, two USB Type-C ports which are not Thunderbolt 3 as this is an AMD laptop, and then you have your SIM card tray if you want to put a SIM card in here and use cellular connectivity.

You do have a fingerprint scanner for Windows Hello or you can use facial recognition at the top to logs you in. Now, you do have a shutter here to open and close the camera for privacy and it does shoot 720p video but just like most other webcams, it doesn’t look that great. You have speakers on the top and they sound great.

Lenovo Thinkpad T14

On the inside, it’s a user-serviceable RAM slit, we’ve put in 32 GB in addition to the 16 onboard. The wireless card is can be upgraded or changed easily and not part of the motherboard. There is a CMOS battery inside. Also, there is a double heat sink pipe. Inside the chassis, it’s a little bit hard to distinguish from the last generation T495.

The boards are very similar except the Thunderbolt 3 is on the Intel mode only, on the AMD model, it’s just USB-C. The HDMI spec on the Intel is version 1.4 and it’s a slightly newer 2.0 standard on the AMD.

PERFORMANCE:

HP Elitebook 845 G7

The most exciting thing about this laptop is its performance. This 4750U is the fastest AMD Pro processor you can get, paired with 16 gigabytes of RAM, a 256-gigabyte NVMe SSD, and you have a very formidable business laptop. It doesn’t matter what multi-core test you run, this will dominate any Intel vPro CPU that’s a U-series processor, it’s just that good. Single-core is a little bit different, Intel sometimes holds the upper hand but overall it’s just a very powerful laptop. If I had to choose this over a U series Intel processor, I would choose this one. Even when it comes to developers who are carrying this a lot, you’re going to appreciate the eight cores that this has inside of here because it just chews through compile times.

Heat management was interesting because the keyboard never got super hot, it stayed below 45 degrees celsius but the CPU did tend to get a little hot sometimes hitting 99 to 100 degrees celsius if you let this run for long periods of use. In all fairness, HP is being super conservative with fan noise like 41 to 42 decibels under full load, they really want the business user to have a quiet experience. The AMD processors have a higher threshold than the Intel ones.

Lenovo Thinkpad T14

To get a better idea of the temperature, we pushed the CPU as much as possible. So, on this chassis we find the hotter aspect of it is usually around the vent and the center of it can also get a little bit hot as well as the back but the palm rest is workable. The laptop gets so hot if you push the CPU so hard for high-intensive works. What I would probably suggest is when it’s running heavy workload, put it on a desk or a laptop cooler that’s going to be much better than on your lap. Heat-wise, it’s quite manageable. When we run the Heaven benchmark, the average temperature on the Thinkpad T14 AMD is around 90 degrees and around 87 on the Thinkpad T14 Intel but just keep in mind that the AMD is running it at a faster speed. In the peak scenario, the temperature could get up to 108 degrees for few milliseconds on the Thinkpad T14 AMD model.

To be clear, regardless of what processor you pick the T14 is not a gaming laptop, it doesn’t claim to be. This is a business laptop, the AMD model has slightly more powerful integrated graphics, the square difference is quite noticeable. The Intel model can have in some regions hopefully the NVIDIA option, the performance will be similar to the AMD version but you would pay a premium. Additionally, on the Intel model, you will be able to use the external GPU through the Thunderbolt 3 even though it’s at the slower x2 speed, you can’t do that on the AMD because there’s no Thunderbolt 3. With AMD, it’s faster across the board than the Intel integrator graphics but if you do want more flexibility then maybe look at the Intel.

Here, the base performance is better than the Intel regardless of whether you use a single channel or a dual-channel but with any of the dual-channel, the performance seems to be up quite a bit. We’ve also tested a Geekbench which was quite interesting in the single channels which is okay but the dual-channel really flew in terms of the results. Additionally, in Geekbench, when you run asymmetrically match RAM for instance 16 GB + 32 GB, it did affect the performance but not as much as we thought it would. It might be certain workload is more affected by this but what it also probably means is on the Lenovo T14 if you want more RAM and optimal performance, the 16 GB + 16 GB is probably the optimal option unless you want to go with 16 GB + 32 GB. In that case in some applications, it might be a little bit slower but as mentioned this is works well.

In the Geekbench, there’s some performance degradation on the battery versus when it’s plugged in, that’s fairly normal. When you go from single-channel to dual-channel, there seems to be a noticeable performance jump, it seems like any of the dual-channel configurations over single channel, 48 gigabyte RAM although is not as fast as paired RAM better than the single channel. When you look at the R20 result, they’re fairly promising. There’s very little performance degradation when you switch on to the battery. Multi-channel seems to get you a better result than single-channel which I think is quite predictable. The R15 results are higher than the T14s, I think this is roughly what we expect around a 5% to 10% difference, multi-threaded-wise, it’s comparable to Intel six-core which is quite promising, and in terms of the single performance, it’s similar.

BATTERY:

HP Elitebook 845 G7

This has a 53-watt hour battery inside this laptop. This battery gave me around 15 hours of use and that is absolutely insane. This is the best battery life I’ve seen on an AMD laptop.

Lenovo Thinkpad T14

This Thinkpad T14 has a 3-cell 50-watt hour battery inside it. This gives around 8 hours of battery life on web surfing test.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14

WHICH TO BUY?

If you think that AMD Pro fits in your infrastructure properly, then I would get this Elitebook 845 G7 over Intel vPro equivalence. You just get significantly much better performance per dollar and battery life. The AMD’s use case in this Thinkpad T14 has been really clearly offline. If you want a multi-threaded performance that’s a really clear go-to.

From this review, we can see that both of these laptops work well for all the works like casual works, media consumption, and also productivity works. The price range of both these laptops is also so similar. At last, it will be your choice that which one is more attractive to you considering all the features of these laptops.
